In high school baseball
Ian Hess tossed a 6-hit shutout to help Canon-McMillan to a 2-0 victory over Peters Township in a Section 3 game in Class 6A.
Hess struck out 9 and did not walk a batter as C-M moved to 4-2 in the section and 7-3 overall. Hess hit a sacrifice fly to knock in a run in the first inning and Brandon Kline drove in the other run with a single in the fourth.
Joe Ehland doubled for the Indians (2-4, 5-7).
- Fort Cherry batted around in the second inning, scoring seven runs, on the way to a 7-4 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 1-AA game.
Cam Schaub picked up the win for the Rangers (5-1, 5-1). Andrew Kowalski went 3-for-3 with a double for the Bucs (3-3, 4-4).
- Cornell scored in all six innings of its 12-2 victory over Avella in a Section 3-A game.
Stefan Blackstone and Ty Godfrey each had a double and 3 RBI for Cornell (3-1, 3-1).
James Taylor doubled for Avella (0-3, 0-4).
- Al Cree had a double, single and drove in four runs to help Carmichaels shut out Burgettstown, 13-0, in a 5-inning Section 1-AA game.
Matt Barrish struck out 5 and didn’t walk a batter for the Mikes (3-1, 3-2). Dylan Wilson and Chad Ruse each knocked in two runs, Nick Mundell doubled, singled, scored a run and drove in a run, and four other players scored twice.
Ryan Lounder doubled for the Blue Devils (1-3, 2-3).
- Bryce Bedillion struck out 11 and walked just one to lead Jefferson-Morgan to a 12-2 victory over Mapletown in a 6-inning Section 2-A game.
Zack Gamble went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored, Colten Davidson went 3-for-5 and scored, and Bedillion went 2-for-4, scored 3 times and drove in a run for J-M (3-2, 4-2). Jake Broadwater and Justin Maddich each scored twice.
Brian Bogden drove in two run for the Maples (0-4, 0-6).
- Joey Alcorn went 2-for-3 and scored twice to pace South Fayette to a 9-4 win over Quaker Valley in a Section 2 game in Class 4A.
Eli Snider doubled for the Lions (5-1, 7-3) and Tyler Bedillion picked up the win.
Quaker Valley fell to 1-4 and 1-4.
In high school softball
West Mifflin used a 14-hit attack totake a 7-2 victory from South Fayette in Section2 of Class 4A.
Lauren Yuhas double, tripled and scored twice for West Mifflin (4-3, 6-4). Jaden Arcuri went 3-for-4 withe a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
Ashley Micholas and Lauren Bernett each drove in a run for the Lions (1-4, 3-6).
- Marlaina Bozek went 4-for-4, scored 4 runs and drove in 2 to pace Trinity to a 10-0 victory over Laurel Highlands in a Section 2 game in Class 5A.
Kylie Poland and Emma Morgan combined on a one-hitter as Poland got the win and also hit a double. Payton Barr doubled for the Hillers (4-2, 8-4) and Bailey Bell hit the first pitch of a game for a home run.
- Carmichaels hit seven doubles as a team to defeat Jefferson-Morgan, 6-1, in a Section 2 Class A game.
Mikes’ starting pitcher Kylie Sinn went all seven innings and struck out 12. Megan Walker hit a pair of doubles for Carmichaels (4-2, 6-4).
Autumn Gustovich had a double Jefferson-Morgan (0-4, 1-4).
- Monessen scored 11 runs in the first inning and seven in the second to defeat Avella, 18-0, in a Section 2 game in Class A.
The Greyhounds were paced by cleanup hitter Mattie Telegraphis, who went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and seven RBI.
Dana Vatakis earned the victory in the circle with eight strikeouts.
- Erica Haught and Katelyn Greaves each went 2-for-4 to lead Canon-McMillan to a 10-0 victory over Section 1 Class 6A foe Brashear to remain undefeated.
The Big Macs (3-0, 4-0) had 14 hits as a team before they ended the game in the sixth inning after scoring their 10th run.
Abi Michelucci and Lauren Drake combined to pitch a two-hitter for C-M, each allowing one hit.
Brashear is 0-4 in section and 0-5 overall.
In high school lacrosse
Emily Anderson scored four goals to lead the Peters Township High School girls lacrosse team to a 19-1 victory over Baldwin.
Natalie Cocco scored three goals and had an assist for the Indians. Payton Jenkins and Tia Mussitsch each scored twice for PT.
At The Meadows
Expose Yourself put away the venerable Barn Girl with a quick backside burst and earned a convincing victory, her third straight, in Wednesday’s $20,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.
The 2017 Horse of the Year at The Meadows, Barn Girl entered the race off three straight wins but had to work hard from post 9 to get the early lead in 27.2. When Dave Palone moved Expose Yourself from fourth, she exploited the favorite’s vulnerability and scored in 1:55.1, matching her career best. The game Barn Girl persevered and earned place, 1-1/4 lengths back, with Ameliosi third.
Ron Burke trains Expose Yourself, a 4-year-old daughter of Kadabra-Muscle Shirt, for Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.
Mile Wilder collected four wins on the 12-race card.
In college baseball
Washington & Jefferson College baseball player Ryan Sciullo became the school’s career triples leader in a pair of wins against Presidents’ Athletic Conference opponent Waynesburg, 11-1 and 4-1.
Sciullo hit his record-breaking triple in the first inning of Game 1, the 19th of his career.
The doubleheader sweep improves W&J to 19-9-1 and 11-1 in the PAC.
Waynesburg drops to 7-19 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
In college softball
The Washington & Jefferson College softball team split a doubleheader with PAC opponent Geneva with a 4-1 loss in Game 1 and a 7-3 win in Game 2.
The Presidents are 3-7 in the conference and 7-15 overall.
Geneva is 4-8 in the PAC and 12-14 overall.
In college lacrosse
The Waynesburg University women’s lacrosse team traveled to Chatham for an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference match Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets fell 20-0 to the Cougars.
Chatham (6-8, 4-5) grabbed a 16-0 lead at halftime before wrapping up the victory. Waynesburg (0-11, 0-7) senior Carissa Doody made 11 saves over 60 minutes in goal. Freshman Breanna Martini led the Jackets in shots (five), ground balls (three) and draw controls (three).
- The Washington & Jefferson College women’s lacrosse team defeated Westminster College, 16-3, in an ORLC match.
The Presidents improve to 6-1 in conference play and 9-3 overall.
Westminster falls to 3-4 in the ORLC and 3-7 overall.
