High school softball roundup: Belle Vernon beats Lebo on home runs, Parshall’s pitching
Sophia Godzak and Bailey Parshall hit solo home runs in the eighth inning as Belle Vernon broke a scoreless tie to defeat Mt. Lebanon, 2-0, in non-section play Friday afternoon.
The home runs represented two of the five hits for the Leopards.
Parshall kept Belle Vernon (7-2) in the game by dominating in the circle. She surrendered one hit and had 11 strikeouts.
The lone hit for Mt. Lebanon (4-3) was a single from Megan Detrick.
• Ella Brookman homered, Jaylese Lombardi drove in three runs and Kaitlyn Dittrich pitched five strong innings as Chartiers-Houston defeated visiting Beth-Center 11-1 in Section 3-AA.
After Beth-Center (1-5, 1-6) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning, Charters-Houston (5-1, 8-1) dominated the rest of the way with a 12-hit attack. Madyson Smith was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI, Brookman ended the game with a two-run homer in the sixth, Lombardi had a triple and Karlyn Bayer was 2-for-2 with a double.
Dittrich allowed three hits and struck out nine.
Losing pitcher MacKenzie Crile had two hits, including a triple, for Beth-Center.
• Jessia Dean struck out nine and held visiting Waynesburg scoreless over the final four innings as South park defeated the Raiders 7-2 in a battle for first place in Section 3-AAA.
Waynesburg (4-1, 6-3) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run double by Rachel Elsenheimer, who went 2-for-4.
South Park (5-0, 5-1), however, scored three runs in the bottom of the third and two each in the fifth and sixth innings. Kaitlyn Morrison was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI for the Eagles. Kelly Mesick had a double.
• Jefferson-Morgan scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for a 7-5 victory over California in Section 2-A.
It was the first section win for J-M (1-4, 2-4) and the Rockets did it by overcoming a 3-0 deficit after three innings. J-M scored one run in the fourth and used the big fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Krista McCartney led the J-M offense with three singles. Winning pitcher Cait Dugan had a double.
Kristina Luko had a double for Cal (1-4, 1-5).
• Winning pitcher Bri Butler worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning and helped her cause by driving in a run and scoring another as Keystone Oaks edged host South Fayette, 4-3, in Class 4A Section 2.
South Fayette (1-5, 3-7) had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh but Butler got her fourth strikeout of the game and a flyout to secure the first section win for KO (1-5, 3-6).
Butler had a triple among her two hits. Lauren Bennett and Charley Cribben each had a double for South Fayette and Madison Potteiger had two singles.
