Wild Things draft pair of pitchers
The Washington Wild Things made a pair of selections in the 2018 Frontier League Draft Tuesday, following the league’s annual open tryout in Florence, Ky.
Washington selected left-handed pitcher Jacob Hill, younger brother of Wild Things’ third baseman Mike Hill, with the second pick in the draft.
Drafted twice – in the 40th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Washington Nationals and in the 32nd round of the 2015 Draft by the Cleveland Indians – Jacob Hill opted to return to the University of San Diego.
In his senior season at San Diego, he threw eight innings before suffering an injury. He played two seasons at Orange Coast College, a junior college in Costa Mesa, Calif., in 2013 and 2014.
Jacob Hill enjoyed his best season in 2014 at Orange Coast College when he went 11-0 with a 1.27 ERA in 71 innings.
The Wild Things acquired the second overall pick in a trade that sent Kenny Peoples-Walls to Traverse City. Peoples-Walls, an outfielder, hit .246 and drove in 45 runs in 74 games last season for Washington.
With the 10th pick, the Wild Things selected right-handed pitcher Griffin Krieg, who played five seasons at East Tennessee State University. Krieg struck out 188 batters in 239 2/3 innings, pitching in the starting rotation and out of the bullpen for the Buccaneers.
The Wild Things open the season May 11 at Evansville.
