The Waynesburg University women’s lacrosse team wrapped up its 2018 season on Saturday when it hosted Earlham for senior day. The Yellow Jackets dropped the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference contest 17-2.
After falling behind 10-0 in the first half, Waynesburg (0-15, 0-11) got its first goal of the day from sophomore Jackie Adler. Freshman Breanna Martini assisted on the tally. Earlham (5-11, 4-7) found the back of the net one more time before the end of the half to take an 11-1 lead into the break.
The Yellow Jackets’ final goal of the season came with 22:38 showing on the game clock when junior Delaney Denniston split the pipes in a man-up situation to make the score 12-2.
- Senior Caroline Kallos scored seven goals, caused turnovers and controlled draws as Washington & Jefferson pulled away in the second half of a 17-10 win at Mount St. Joseph.
The Presidents finish the regular season at 12-3 overall with a 10-1 mark in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference, however, one of those ORLC wins is only via a Thomas More forfeit. W&J will be the second seed in next week’s ORLC tournament at Transylvania and will play third-seeded Saint Vincent on Friday in Lexington, Ky.
A back-and-forth first half saw W&J hold a 6-5 lead at halftime, but the Lions scored the first two scores of the second half to take a 7-6 lead. Kallos and Sofiya Bobrovnikova just over a minute apart and W&J got the lead back at 8-7 with 26:24 to play.
After MSJ tied the game at 8-8, three-straight Presidents’ goals, including the first two from Kallos put W&J ahead for good en route to the 17-10 win.
- Mark Mandak scored the game-tying goal with 27 seconds remaining in regulation before Pat Heidecker broke the tie 19 seconds into overtime as Washington & Jefferson took down Hanover, 10-9.
After Michael Aaron Pray III won the overtime-opening face-off clean, the Presidents called a time out to set up their offense. Not long after, Heidecker cut through the middle in front of the cage and took a pass from Ben Ward of Canon-McMillan before firing past the Hanover goalie for the winning score. Mandak’s game-tying and unassisted goal near the end of regulation match a Panthers’ score 33 seconds earlier that had initially broken an 8-8 tie.
