The finger could be pointed directly at the offense over the last three games for Windy City.

That wasn’t the case Sunday evening.

In the first seven innings, Windy City collected 18 hits and scored in six of the seven frames to defeat the Wild Things, 13-2, in a Frontier League game at Wild Things Park.

The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Thunderbolts, who were swept in a doubleheader Saturday by Washington after combining for only nine hits and three runs in the two games. Windy City only pushed across one run in Thursday’s loss to Lake Erie.

Windy City began its hit parade when it took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single from Axel Johnson that scored Tim Zier. The Thunderbolts added onto their lead with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings.

The lone scoring for the Wild Things came on a single from Brett Marr to score Kyle Pollock and Carter McEachern to cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth inning.

But Windy City answered in its next at-bat was Matt Brown hit a two-run home run and Larry Balkwill hit a solo shot. The Thunderbolts scored on a wild pitch in the sixth then added three more runs in the seventh when Balkwill was hit by a pitch and Derek Banger doubled home two runs.

None of the five pitchers for the Wild Things found success. Each gave up at least one run, including starter Chase Cunningham (6-5), who exited after surrendering five runs on 10 hits through four innings. BJ Sabol, Kellen Croce and James Meeker all gave up multiple runs in relief.

Jake Welch (6-4) had plenty of help to earn his sixth win of the season. The top six batters in the Thunderbolts’ lineup had at least two hits.

Roman Collins went 3-for-4 for the Wild Things. Marr also had a pair of hits.

Washington has two days off before playing a doubleheader Wednesday at Traverse City.
