Dukes down Maine
Marcus Weathers scored 13 points and Duquesne led from start to finish in a 72-46 victory over Maine on Sunday.
The Dukes, who improved to 8-2 under second-year coach Keith Dambrot, opened the game with a 26-7 run over the first 13 minutes and led 40-16 at halftime.
Maine (2-10) was led by Isaiah White with a game-high 17 points and Vilgot Larsson with 10 points.
Eric Williams scored 11 points off the bench for Duquesne. He scored eight in the first half as the Dukes shot 48 percent from the field and had 11 assists on their 15 made field goals.
Kellon Taylor, who also plays wide receiver on the Dukes’ football team, made his season debut in basketball and led the Dukes with seven rebounds. Freshman point guard Sincere Carry had nine points and nine assists.
In golf
Davis Love III and his son Dru played so well Sunday that they set two scoring records, rallied from a three-shot deficit to win the PNC Father-Son Challenge and then wondered if they would get to play again.
Team Love shot 27 on the front nine at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club to get in the mix, took the lead with a birdie at No. 11 and finished off their record round with four more birdies an eagle for a 16-under 56, breaking by one the 18-hole record in a scramble format.
They won by three shots at 26-under 118, another record in the scramble format.
“Who knows? This might be our last time playing, so it was fun to finish it off,” Love said.
The 36-hole event is for players who have won a major or The Players Championship, and their partner cannot hold a PGA Tour-sanctioned card. Dru Love has played 17 times in the last two years on the PGA Tour, European Tour and Web.com Tour, but he has yet to earn a card and missed out in the qualifying tournament this year.
They were unstoppable in the second and final round, making only four pars and the rest birdies and two eagles.
- David Lipsky won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa on his first attempt as his final-round 68 gave him a two-shot victory over David Drysdale.
Lipsky finished on 14-under 274 and kept his nerve at the end of his round to clinch a second career European Tour title. He made a double-bogey five on the 16th but a par on 17 and a birdie on the 18th made sure of the title for the American.
Waynesburg wrestlers go 1-3
The Waynesburg University wrestling team saw its final action of the 2018 calendar year on Saturday when it took part in the Kalahari Duals, hosted by Heidelberg. The Yellow Jackets went 1-3.
The Yellow Jackets (5-7) got the day off to a good start by doubling up former Presidents’ Athletic Conference rival Thomas More (5-7). The Yellow Jackets followed with a 32-9 loss to Heidelberg (7-2), a 38-15 defeat at the hands of sixth-ranked Mount Union (10-0) and a 32-15 setback at the hands of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
As they have done all season, junior 197-pounder Ken Burrs and senior heavyweight Jake Evans led the charge for Waynesburg.
Burrs posted a 2-1 record with his second win over a top-10 ranked opponent in a week. The two-time PAC champion looked strong in a 12-6 victory over seventh-ranked Tyler Hammack of Heidelberg. He nearly scored another victory over a ranked opponent, but came up just short in a 9-7 decision against Oshkosh’s ninth-ranked Beau Yineman.
Evans was perhaps the most dominant competitor in the seven-team field. The top-ranked and returning national champion at 285 pounds went 4-0 with all four victories coming by pin, three of which occurred in the first period.
