Basketball roundup: Fight mars Monessen win; C-M upset by Baldwin

Nearly halfway through the fourth quarter, with Monessen holding a nine-point lead, a benches clearing brawl ensued between players and fans at the Clairton Education Center gymnasium.

Officials ended the game after police broke up the incident leading to Monessen’s fifth consecutive section title, 54-45.

If Clairton would have defeated Monessen, the teams would have likely shared the Section 2-A title.

Lyndon Henderson led Monessen with 19 points.

Baldwin 55, Canon-McMilllan 52: Nick Fiumara hit two free throws in the final seconds as Baldwin handed Canon-McMillan a stinging upset, 55-52, in a Section 2 game in Class 6A.

The Big Macs (9-2, 18-2) had a 14-game winning streak snapped and fell one game behind Mt. Lebanon for first place in the standings. C-M’s final section game is against Peters Township. Mt. Lebanon has Upper St. Clair.

Fiumara poured in 18 points and Mike Goga had 11 points for Baldwin (4-7, 9-10).

Jason Fowlkes had 17 points and a final attempt to tie the game for C-M but his desperation three missed the mark. Drew Engel was in double figures with 11 points. Canon-Mac trailed 12-9 after one quarter and 27-23 at halftime. Baldwin led 42-37 after three quarters.

Fowlkes had six points in the fourth quarter and hit a layup to cut Baldwin’s lead to one before Fiumara’s free throws.

South Fayette 42, McGuffey 36: South Fayette remained in the hunt for the Section 3 title in Class 4A with a 42-36 victory over McGuffey.

South Fayette (10-3, 13-6) remains a game be hind Belle Vernon for first place in the section. Both teams have one section game remaining.

Tim Locher scored 13 points for South Fayette (10-3, 13-6), which rallied from a 19-14 halftime deficit.

David Chapman scored 16 points and Trent Belleville added 15 points for the Highlanders (4-9,, 11-10), who were outscored 28-17 in the second half.

Chartiers-Houston 73, Jefferson-Morgan 51: Andrew Clark and Zach Southern combined for 43 points to power Chartiers-Houston to a 73-51 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-AA game in Jefferson.

Clark poured in 23 points and Southern 20 for the Bucs (10-1, 15-4), who broke the game open with a 25-11 edge in the third quarter. Cam Hanley added 16 points for C-H.

Jefferson-Morgan (2-9, 9-12) was paced by Jalen Torres’ 17 points, D.L. Garrett’s 14 points and Josh Clites’ 10 points.

Western Beaver 59, Fort Cherry 44: Four players scored in double figures to power Western Beaver to a 59-44 victory over Fort Cherry in a non-section game.

Noah Gray had a game-high 20 points for WB (5-14). Lou Hapach scored 13 points, Jeddy Young 12 and Lincoln Martin 10.

Fort Cherry (9-11) was carried by Nate Higham’s 17 points and Zach Vincenti’s 12.

Laurel Highlands 77, Ringgold 41: The WPIAL’s leading scorer, Bryce Laskey, poured in a game-high 35 points to send Laurel Highlands to a 77-41 victory over Ringgold in a Section 1 game in Class 5A.

Connor Basinger added 12 points for LH (7-4, 12-8), which held the Rams (0-11, 2-18) to 15 second-half points.

Jaden Taylor scored 18 points and Demetrius Butler chipped in with 10 points for Ringgold.

Mt. Lebanon 67, Peters Township 32: Blaine Gartley scored a game-high 25 points as Mt. Lebanon defeated Peters Township 67-32 and move into sole possession of first place in Class 6A Section 2.

Scoring 25 points in the second quarter, the Blue Devils raced out to a 42-13 halftime lead over Peters Township (1-10, 5-15).

Mt. Lebanon (10-1, 18-3) then scored 19 points in the third quarter before letting off of the gas in the fourth quarter.

Caden Hinckley finished with 17 points for the Blue Devils, while Antonio Garofoli chipped in with 10 points.

Colin Cote led Peters Township with 15 points.

Belle Vernon 62, Uniontown 61: Belle Vernon used a big third quarter and a second-half comeback to defeat Uniontown 62-61 in clinch at least a share of the Class 4A Section 3 title.

Trailing 39-30 at halftime, the Leopards outscored Uniontown (8-5, 12-8) by nine points in the third quarter to tie the game at 50-50 entering the final eight minutes.

Joe Sabolek and Bryce Washington led the Belle Vernon (11-2, 16-4) comeback with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

It’s the second time in less than two weeks the Leopards defeated Uniontown (8-5, 12-8).

Trenton Uphold led the Raiders with 23 points.

Washington 60, Beth-Center 17: The Prexies showed once again that they were the best defensive team in Section 4-AAA.

Washington limited Beth-Center to five points or fewer in all four quarters to defeat the Bulldogs 60-17 to complete an unblemished record in section play.

The Prexies, who have given up the fewest points per game in the section (44.9), won their 11th consecutive game.

Zahmere Robinson led Washington (12-0, 16-3) with 20 points. Joe Mercer and Dan Ethridge also chipped in with 14 points each for the Prexies.

Beth-Center (2-9, 5-14) lost its fifth consecutive contest.

Trinity 66, West Mifflin 28: Trinity stayed in second place in Class 5A Section 1 with a quick start as the Hillers downed West Mifflin, 66-28.

Trinity (9-2, 16-4) outscored the Titans 16-2 in the first eight minutes, then continued its dominance in the second quarter to take a 36-8 lead into halftime.

In limited action, Joey Koroly, Zach Ecker and Jeff Ecker all scored in double figures for the Hillers. Koroly led all scorers with 13 points, while the Ecker twins each finished with 10 points.

West Mifflin (3-8, 4-13) was paced by Trey Manspeaker’s 10-point night.

West Greene 57, Avella 35: Austin Crouse made a trio of three-pointers en route to his game-high 21 points as West Greene defeated Avella 57-35 in a Section 2-A game.

Crouse helped the Pioneers jump out to a 27-17 lead at halftime, while Nathan Brudnock chipped in with a 16-point performance.

West Greene improved to 6-3 in a section play and 8-12 overall.

Avella (2-8, 2-17) was paced by Dylan Markle, who was the only Eagle to finish in double figures with 13 points.

South Park 85, Waynesburg 68: Scoring points wasn’t the problem for the Raiders, but even a 25-point fourth quarter couldn’t cut the Waynesburg deficit.

South Park scored at least 21 points in all four quarters to defeat the Raiders 85-68 in a Class 4A Section 3 contest.

The Eagles outscored Waynesburg 26-15 in the first quarter and led 47-31 at halftime.

Damon Smith and Jake Snodgrass each scored 17 points for South Park (9-4, 12-7). Michael Graham also had a good night with 11 points.

Waynesburg, which falls to 1-12 in the section and 4-16 overall, was led by Darton McIntire’s game-high 28 points.

Girls Results

West Greene 69, Bentworth 28: Four players scored in double figures to propel West Greene to a 69-28 victory over Bentworth in a non-section game.

McKenna Lampe led West Greene (19-1) with 18 points. Kaitlyn Rizor tossed in 17 points, Elizabeth Brudnock 12 and Jersey Wise 11.

Bentworth (3-18) was led by Jenna Vito’s 11 points.
