Basketball roundup: Burgettstown downs South Side for 2nd place; J-M’s Torres scores 1,000 point
Burgettstown turned one of its struggles into a major success when it mattered most.
The Blue Devils made 14 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to defeat South Side Beaver 72-55 in a battle for second place in Section 4-AAA.
Burgettstown (9-3, 15-6) was trailing by one point, 47-46, entering the fourth quarter but outscored the Rams 26-8 in the final eight minutes.
Ryan Lounder paced the Blue Devils with eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. Garrett Dhans led all scorers with 22 points.
South Side (8-4, 9-11) trailed 33-29 at halftime before a big third quarter gave it a narrow lead.
Logan English and Jake McDougal each reached double figures for the Rams with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
Carmichaels 82, Jefferson-Morgan 61: Despite Jefferson-Morgan’s Jalen Torres scoring the 1,000th point of his career, the Rockets couldn’t pull off the road victory at Carmichaels.
Five Carmichaels players scored in double figures to lead the Mighty Mikes to a 82-61 Section 2-AA victory.
Jacob Lowry led the Mikes with 19 points, while Dylan Wilson and Matt Barrish followed with 16 apiece. Al Cree and Garret Ponick also chipped in with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
After leading by eight points at halftime, the Mikes pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Rockets 21-11 to seal the victory.
Torres scored 25 points to clear the milestone and lead all scorers. DL Garrett and Josh Clites added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
McGuffey 67, South Park 52: It wasn’t just another double-double performance for McGuffey’s Trent Belleville.
The senior forward scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 21 rebounds as McGuffey defeated South Park 67-57 in a Class 4A Section 3 game.
Freshman guard Nate Witkowsky also scored a single-game high in his young career for the Highlanders.
Witkowsky finished with 14 points as McGuffey (5-9, 12-10) outscored the Eagles 33-11 in the final 12 minutes of the game.
The Highlanders trailed 41-34 halfway through the third quarter before the comeback.
C.J. Cole also chipped in 13 points for McGuffey.
South Park (9-5, 12-8) was led by Damon Smith’s 15 points. Jake Snodgrass also scored 10.
Uniontown 95, Waynesburg 72: Kamaron Fitzgerald and Billy Deshields combined for 54 points as Uniontown defeated Waynesburg 95-72 in Class 4A Section 3.
Fitgerald scored 28 points, while Deshields finished with 26 as Uniontown jumped out to a 50-35 halftime lead.
Waynesburg (1-13, 4-17) found its offense in the second and third quarters. The Raiders combined to scored 43 points in the 16 minutes, an effort led by Darton McIntire, who finished with team-high 27 points. Richard Bortz also had 14 points.
Trenton Uphold chipped in with 14 points for Uniontown (9-5, 13-8).
Bentworth 63, Avella 33: Three players scored in double figures for Bentworth as the Bearcats downed Avella 63-33 in non-section play.
Levi Jordan scored a game-high 19 points, Steven Harner finished with 16 and Ray Logan put together a solid night with 13 points to lead Bentworth (12-8).
Avella (2-18) struggled to find offense, scoring fewer than 10 points in three of the four quarters as the Eagles trailed 39-14 at halftime.
Tyler Cerciello, Noah Taylor and Zack Cannon each had six points for Avella.
Monessen 74, West Greene 40: With a 74-40 win over West Greene, Monessen finished the Section 2-A season undefeated for the fifth straight season.
The Greyhounds’ 54-game section winning streak dates back to the beginning of the 2013-14 season.
Monessen’s defense led the team to victory, as the Greyhounds (10-0, 13-7) held West Greene (6-4, 8-13) to four points in the first quarter and three points in the fourth quarter.
Lyndon Henderson led all scorers with 26 points. The junior guard scored 10 points in the first quarter and made three three-pointers in the game.
Cory Fleming followed Henderson with 16 points, while Nathan Brudnock and Austin Crouse scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Pioneers.
Trinity 80, Ringgold 43: Already locked into the No. 2 seed in Section 1-5A, Trinity routed host Ringgold 80-43.
Trinity (10-2, 17-4) jumped out to an 18-11 lead after the first quarter and saw that lead increase in the second quarter, as the Hillers outscored Ringgold (0-12, 2-19) 27-5.
Leading 45-26 at halftime, the Hillers scored 27 points again in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Senior guard Joey Koroly, who recently committed to Washington & Jefferson to play running back, led all scorers with 17 points, while Christian Egen led the Rams with 15 points.
Zach Ecker and Dylan Kern followed Koroly with 13 and 10 points, respectively, and Jayden Taylor and Demetrius Butler both scored 10 for the Rams.
Washington 60, Steel Valley 48: Wash High used consistent scoring to win its 11th straight game in a non-section contest at Steel Valley.
The Prexies scored 12 or more points in all four quarters to defeat the Ironmen 60-48.
Going into the fourth quarter up only five points, Wash High (17-3) outscored Steel Valley (9-11) 19-12 in the last eight minutes.
Dan Ethridge led all scorers with 18 points. Zahmere Robinson followed with 14 points and Joe Mercer finished with 11 points.
Chase Polak and Amonté Strothers led the Ironment with 12 points, and Camden Polak followed with 10 points.
Wash High hasn’t lost a game since a six-point loss to Class 5A Trinity on Jan. 6.
Charleroi 75, Southmoreland 68: Caleb Carson and Joe Caruso scored 38 combined points to lead Charleroi to a 75-68 win over visiting Section 4-AAA foe Southmoreland.
Carson led all scorers with 21 points, while Caruso followed with 17 points.
Charleroi (3-9, 7-14) jumped out to a 25-13 lead after the first quarter, but Southmoreland (3-9, 4-18) scored 31 points in the second quarter to go down only two points.
The Cougars couldn’t pull away in the second half as they did in the first quarter, though they held Southmoreland to only eight points in the third to lead to the win.
Cade Richter and Ronnie Robinson led the Scotties with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Brownsville 81, Beth-Center 43: A fast start led the Brownsville Falcons to a 81-43 Section 4-AAA road victory over Beth-Center.
Brownsville (5-7, 9-11) jumped out to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter, and the second quarter was only better for the Falcons, as they outscored Beth-Center (2-10, 5-15) 23-6 in to take a 29-point lead into halftime.
The Falcons stayed hot in the third quarter, scoring 26 points to Beth-Center’s 18 before an even fourth quarter.
Shandon Marshall and Phil Pace led all scorers with 26 and 22 points, respectively, while Nick Seto chipped in with 10 points.
Beth-Center’s Jimmy Hunyady led the Bulldogs with 10 points.
Belle Vernon 69, Elizabeth Forward 42: Belle Vernon clinched the Section 3-4A title with a 69-42 home win over Elizabeth Forward.
The nice win caps off a 12-2 section season for the senior-laden Leopards, who were led by nine seniors.
Consistent scoring led Belle Vernon (12-2, 17-4) to the victory, as the Leopards scored between 16 and 20 points in every quarter.
It was BV’s defense, though, that got the Leopards to lead early, as they allowed only 12 points in the first half. The Leopards led by 21 points at halftime and extended the lead to 29 points before an even fourth quarter.
EF’s Will Greijack was the only player to score in double figures, as the 6-8 senior forward dropped 28 points in the loss.
California 69, Frazier 47: In a game for third place in Section 2-AA, California outscored visiting Frazier in every quarter for the 69-47 win.
California’s leading scorer Ben Wilson returned after missing seven games with an injury. The senior had a nice return for the Trojans, leading all scorers with 19 points.
With a seven-point lead at halftime, California (7-5, 13-7) pulled away in the third quarter, as the Trojans outscored Frazier (6-6, 8-11) by 11 points in the period.
Cochise Ryan and Dru Miller followed Wilson with 15 and 10 points, respectively, while JD Celashi was the only Commodore in double digits with 11 points.
Girls Results
Carmichaels 69, Jeannette 43: Kristina Aeschbacher scored a game-high 19 points as Carmichaels couldn’t be stopped offensively as it defeated Jeannette 69-43 in a Section 3-AA contest.
Jumping out to a 19-14 lead after a Jaydn Barnish last second shot to end the first quarter, Carmichaels (3-11, 6-15) went into halftime with a 34-27 advantage.
Three other players reached double digits for the Mikes. Jadyn Barnish scored 16 points, Megan Walker had 13 and Kylie Sinn chipped in 10.
Dymond Crawford led Jeannette (4-10, 7-15) with 14 points.
