Small college basketball roundup: IUP routs Cal in PSAC women’s showdown

Megan Smith scored 23 points as Indiana rolled over visiting California 79-49 Saturday night in a key PSAC West Division women’s basketball game.

The win keeps Indiana (18-2, 23-2) tied for first place in the division with Edinboro. California fell to 16-4 in the PSAC and 21-5 overall.

Indiana, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, took control of the game by outscoring Cal 20-8 in the second quarter and opening a 39-23 halftime lead. Smith scored 14 of her points in the first half, when the Crimson hawks shot 50 percent and outrebounded Cal 22-12.

Cal shot only 33 percent in the first half and 32 percent for the game. The Vulcans did not make a field goal in the game’s final six minutes.

Carolyn Appleby scored 19 points for Indiana and Brittany Robinson had 10 to go with a game-high eight rebounds.

D.J. Hahn led Cal with 16 points and Shatara Parson had 15. Parsons was held to four points in the second half.

Thomas More 92, Wash & Jeff 42: Presidents Athletic Conference regular-season champion Thomas More defeated Washington & Jefferson, 92-42, Saturday afternoon in Crestview Hills, Ky.

For Thomas More (18-0, 24-1), which is ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III, the game was the final regular-season contest as a member of the PAC. The Saints will leave the conference at season’s end.

Thomas More, however, will host the PAC Tournament semifinals and finals next weekend.

W&J falls to 15-3 in the PAC and 21-4 overall. The Presidents will be the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament and also receives a double bye into the semifinals. W&J will play in the 6 p.m. game Friday night.

Thomas More’s Madison Temple led all players with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Abby Owings followed with 17 points, Nikki Kiernan had 16 points and Emily Schultz 11 points. Thomas More scored 54 points in the second half.

Amirah Moore was the only W&J players to score in double figures. She had 17 points. The Presidents shot only 21 percent.

Waynesburg 82, Geneva 62: Waynesburg outscored visiting Geneva in every quarter en route to an 82-62 victory in a PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg (9-9, 14-11) had all five of its starters score in double figures, led by senior forward Addy Knetzer, who had 21 points and seven rebounds.

Monica Starre had 13 points, Mackenna Drazich and Rachel Eng each had 11 and Erin Joyce scored 10 for the Yellow Jackets, who outrebounded Geneva by a 49-30 margin.

Callie Ford scored a game-high 26 points for Geneva (5-13, 8-17).

Waynesburg will open play in the PAC tournament with a first-round game at home against Westminster (3-15, 7-18) Monday night. The winner advances to the quarterfinals Wednesday and will play at Grove City (12-6, 17-8).

Men’s results

Waynesburg 86, Geneva 61: Matt Popeck scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Waynesburg to a 86-61 win over Geneva.

Popeck, a Wash High graduate, shot 12-for-20 from the field and eight-for-13 from behind the three-point arc at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The freshman guard also tallied five steals, as the Yellow Jackets forced 25 turnovers, 18 of which off steals, to give Waynesburg (6-12, 10-15) a 36-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

Halfway through the first half of the PAC game, Geneva (7-11, 11-14) led 21-14. Popeck and senior wing Jon Knab then brought the Yellow Jackets back to regain the lead at halftime, 37-33.

The Yellow Jackets continued their hot streak in the second half, as they started the second half on a 16-2 run to take an 18-point lead. Popeck, who is averaging more than 16 points a game, led the Jackets with six three-pointers in the second half.

Along with Popeck’s hot second half was Knab, who scored 21 points on eight-of-14 shooting and four-of-six from three on Waynesburg’s Senior Day.

Thomas More 92, Wash & Jeff 70: Thomas More scored 60 first-half points, shot 59 percent and the PAC regular-season champion Saints cruised to a 92-70 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson.

Hot-shooting Thomas More (16-2, 20-5) forged a 60-34 lead at halftime and made 13 three-point field goals in the game. Sam Clifford led the Saints with a game-high 26 points on 12 of 14 shooting. Ryne Callahan and Matt Knisley each had 11 points.

W&J (4-14, 5-20), which was eliminated from contention for a spot in the PAC tournament, was led by Sean Stinelli, who had four three-pointers among his 19 points. Brian Lindquist scored 14 points.

Indiana 82, California 75: Jacobo Diaz scored 20 points, Anthony Glover and Dante Lombardi each had 19 and Indiana needed a second-half surge to edge Califdornia 82-75 in a PSAC West game.

Indiana (16-4, 20-7) led by as many as 14 points in the first half before California began a comeback and eventually pulled even at 52-52 after a three-pointer by Isaiah Lewis, who led the Vulcans with a game-high 25 points.

IUP, however, then went on a 14-0 run and Cal (6-14, 10-16) never recovered. The Vulcans did score 10 straight points to close to within 76-69.

Cal’s Jahmere Howze scored 15 points, Robel Teckle had 13 and Terry Davis Jr. 10.
