High school basketball roundup: Top-seeded Vincentian ousts California in 2A girls
Caroline Elliott and Katie Bartlett combined for 36 points to spark top-seeded Vincentian Academy to a 64-31 victory over California in the WPIAL Class AA girls basketball quarterfinals Thursday night at Northgate High School.
Elliott scored a game-high 20 points and Bartlett tossed in 16 points as Vincentian improved its record to 21-1.
California drops to 15-8 but the Trojans can still qualify for the PIAA tournament. Seven of the eight quarterfinalists in Class AA advance to the state tournament.
Bailey Vig scored 12 points to lead California and Love Porter had 11 points.
Vincentian ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 14-5 lead. The Royals stretched the streak to 14 unanswered points before California battled back, using three-pointers by Vig and Grace Roberts to close to within 28-18.
Vincentian led 35-20 at halftime and outscored the Trojans 17-4 in the third quarter.
Beaver 63, Belle Vernon 32: Sydney Barney led four Beaver players in double figures with 16 points and the Bobcats cruised to a 63-32 victory over Belle Vernon in the Class 4A quarterfinals at Canon-McMillan.
Beaver (17-5) took control of the game early, forging a 29-16 halftime lead. The Bobcats then opened the second half with a 12-2 run and led 48-19 after three quarters.
Bella Possett scored 15 points for Beaver, Paige Ziggas had 14 and Emma Pavelek 11.
Caitlyn Trombley and Lindsay Steeber each had eight points for Belle Vernon (18-6).
Boys results
Lincoln Park 89, Burgettstown 64: Keno Holmes scored a game-high 34 points and top-seeded Lincoln Park cruised to an 89-64 victory over Burgettstown in a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal game at Ambridge.
Lincoln Park advances to next week’s semifinals with a 17-6 record.
Jacob Schrockman scored 15 points to lead Burgettstown, which falls to 16-7. Dante Gianfrancesco had 11 points and Garrett Dhans had 10.
