Area wrestlers qualify for national tournaments
The Waynesburg University wrestling team had three wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.
Senior Tristan Buxton (125), sophomore Ken Burrs (197) and junior Jake Evans (Hvy) made it by finishing third or better in their respective weight class in the region tournament at Wabash College Saturday.
The championships will be held March 9-10 at the Cleveland Public Auditorium.
Buxton, a graduate of Trinity High School, earned a 7-1 win over Ohio Northern’s Seth Transue that earned him third place at 125 and a spot at nationals.
After coming one win short of nationals last year, Burrs, the 2018 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Outstanding Wrestler gutted out a 7-5 decision over Grant Gough of Wabash to win the bronze medal.
Evans went 4-0 with three falls and a technical fall, and none of his victories lasted longer than 3:38.
Wrestling as the No. 2 seed, Evans rolled into the finals, where he faced top-seeded Nate Barcaskey of Ohio Northern. The Yellow Jackets’ all-time wins leader pinned Barcaskey in just 1:18.
Two Chartiers-Houston graduates – senior Derek Hull (165) and freshman Josh Kuslock (133) – were eliminated in the consolation rounds.
Jake Temple, a graduate of Avella High School, qualified for the NCAA Division II championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, March 9-10.
Temple, a senior at Seton Hill University, took third place at 197 pounds at the Super Regional at Pitt-Johnstown Saturday. He did so with a 6-3 decision over Wes Phipps of Mercyhurst.
Temple made it to the semifinal round, where he fell to Evan Ramos of Shippensburg University, 3-0.
Shippensburg sophomore Cole Rush, a Waynesburg High School graduate, was eliminated in the consolation round.
