High school girls basketball roundup: Another record for Williamson; Riley tops 1,000
Alexa Williamson added another record-breaking performance to her resume Thursday evening.
The 6-1 senior center from Chartiers-Houston set the school record for points in a game by scoring 46 in a 63-32 win at Aliquippa in Section1-AA action.
Williamson, a Temple recruit, also had 16 rebounds and 10 blocks for the Bucs (4-0, 6-3). Williamson had 27 points at halftime and 19 in the second half.
Izea Lay’s 11 points paced the Quips (0-4, 0-9), who trailed 40-13 at halftime.
Charleroi 78, Waynesburg 21: Charleroi senior Kaitlyn Riley eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone as she scored 16 points to help lead the Cougars past Waynesburg 78-21 in a Section 2-AAA game Thursday night at Charleroi High School.
Entering the game needing eight points to reach 1,000 points, Riley achieved the feat on a layup in the middle of the first quarter.
Riley was one of four players to score in double figures for Charleroi (4-0, 9-1). Maria Claybaugh finished with a game-high 17 points, Maggie Albert had 15 and Sierra Short scored 12.
Bree Echegaray had six points for Waynesburg (0-3, 1-8).
Jefferson-Morgan 61, Monessen 29: Jefferson-Morgan had three players score in double figures as the Rockets snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating Monessen 61-29 in a Section 2-A game.
Autumn Gustovich led Jefferson-Morgan (1-1, 2-8) with a game-high 16 points. Sadie Fowler and Krista McCartney were the the others to reach double-digits for the Rockets with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Monessen (0-2, 1-9) trailed 31-15 at halftime. Zakavia Harrison led the Greyhounds with eight points.
West Greene 64, Mapletown 24: West Greene jumped out to a 43-10 lead after the first two quarters to keep its undefeated record intact as the Pioneers defeated Mapletown, 64-24, in a Section 2-A game.
McKenna Lampe scored a game-high 12 points for West Greene (2-0, 9-0). Madison Lampe also had 10 points for the Pioneers.
Mapletown (0-2, 2-8) was paced by Kelsi Smith’s 10 points.
South Side Beaver 49, McGuffey 31: Building a lead in the first quarter and extending that lead with a dominant third, South Side Beaver defeated McGuffey, 49-31, in a Section 2-AAA game.
South Side Beaver outscored McGuffey, 15-7, in the opening eight minutes, then held a 12-point scoring advantage in the third, 15-3, to eventually pull away from the Highlanders.
South Side’s Jess Garber led all scorers with 19 points. Rachel Pleto also scored 15 points.
Leading McGuffey (1-2, 3-7) was Abby Donnelly, who was the only Highlander to score in double figures with 14 points.
Mt. Lebanon 50, Canon-McMillan 40: After a tightly contested first half, Mt. Lebanon pulled away in the final two quarters to defeat Canon-McMillan, 50-40, in a Section 3 game in Class 6A.
Leading by only one point, 19-18, at the break, Mt. Lebanon (2-0, 5-6) outscored the Big Macs, 17-12, in the third quarter to take command of the game.
Alyssa Hyland made four three-pointers to lead the Blue Devils with 16 points.
Canon-McMillan (0-2, 7-3) was led by a double-double for Izzy Allen, who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Carmichaels 53, Bentworth 41: A 22-point fourth quarter wasn’t enough to complete a Bentworth comeback as the Bearcats dropped a Section 3-AA game to Carmichaels, 53-41.
Led by the scoring of Megan Walker and Kylie Sinn, Carmichaels (1-4, 4-6) extended its lead to 33-9 at halftime.
Walker and Sinn tied for a team-high with 14 points each. Jadyn Barnish also had 12 points for Carmichaels.
Bentworth (0-4, 2-7) was powered by Jenna Vito, who scored 17 points. Caroline Rice also finished with 10 points for the Bearcats.
Peters Township 71, Baldwin 48: Peters Township scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to avoid an upset as it defeated Baldwin 71-48 in a Section 3-6A contest.
The Indians, who only took an eight-point advantage into the final quarter, outscored Baldwin 23-8 led by Makenna Marisa, Isabella Mills and Olivia Ziegler.
Marisa led all scorers with 22 points. Isabella Mills had 19 points, including three three-pointers, and Ziegler connected on two three-pointers to finish with 14 for Peters Township (2-0, 9-1).
Abby Larkin had 11 points for Baldwin (0-2, 2-7).
Belle Vernon 65, Derry 28: Ten players found the scoring sheet for Belle Vernon as it used the balanced effort to down Derry, 65-28, in a Section 3-4A game.
Leading Belle Vernon (4-0, 7-3), which jumped out to a 39-12 halftime lead following a 27-point second quarter, was Lindsay Steeber with 15 points. Steeber made three three-pointers for the Leopards.
The lone scorer in double figures for Derry (0-4, 0-9) was Danielle Mullen with 12 points.
South Fayette 67, Montour 45: South Fayette used an early lead and balance scoring to extend its winning streak to four games as the Lions defeated Montour 67-45 in a Section 1-5A game.
The Lions, who outscored Montour in each quarter, were led by 17 points from junior guard Maura Castelluci.
Jordyn Caputo and Sam Kosmacki also scored in double figures for South Fayette (2-0, 5-3) with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Montour (0-2, 3-8) trailed 32-17 at halftime, despite Amalia Esposito finishing with a game-high 20 points. Courtney Tomas also scored 12 for the Spartans.
Geibel 37, Avella 32: The Yourish sisters combined for 21 points to lead Geibel past Avella, 37-32, in a Section 2-A game.
Gabby Yourish led the way with 11 points and Gillian Yourish added 10 for Geibel (1-1, 3-5), which led 20-13 at halftime.
Bess Lengauer and Jordan Rush each scored 8 points for Avella (1-1, 5-4).
California 34, Beth-Center 31: California hit 11 of 12 free throw attempts to push past Beth-Center, 34-31, in a Section 3-AA game.
Bailey Vig scored 12 points for the Trojans (2-2, 5-4).
Olivia Greco tossed in 12 points and delivered 5 assists for Beth-Center (3-1, 6-3). The Bulldogs were 9 of 14 from the free throw line.
Fort Cherry 35, Burgettstown 32: Abby Cooper and McKenzie Faure combined for 27 points to send Fort Cherry past Burgettstown in a Section 1-AA game.
Cooper scored 17 points and Faure added 10 for the Rangers (4-0, 8-2), who outscored the Blue Devils, 14-7, in the fourth quarter.
Burgettstown (1-4, 3-6) was paced by Geena DeMario’s 11 points.
Trinity 75, Laurel Highlands 38: Two Trinity players had double-doubles to help rout Laurel Highlands, 75-38, in Section 3 of Class 5A.
Riley DeRubbo had a game-high 21 points and 10 assists and Julia Chakos scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Hillers (4-0, 8-3). Alayna Cappelli added 16 points.
Laurel Highlands was led by Taylor Smith’s 13 points.
In other games: Greensburg Salem defeated Ringgold, 56-32, in a Section 3 game in Class 5A. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
