High school basketball roundup: Second-half surge lifts Canon-Mac over McGuffey

Jason Fowlkes scored 15 points and led Canon-McMillan’s second-half comeback as the Big Macs rallied for a 63-53 victory over McGuffey in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic held Saturday at Burgettstown High School.

It was a matchup of the two local boys teams with the best records so far this season and it did not disappoint.

McGuffey (9-2) had its seven-game winning streak end but the Highlanders appeared to be on their way to a 10th victory when they led 33-25 at halftime and 40-30 in the third quarter.

Canon-McMillan (8-1), however, battled back with a pivotal 21-3 run.

Fowlkes scored 13 of his 15 points during the second half. The Big Macs made five of their nine three-point field goals during the third quarter, which ended with C-M leading 44-43.

Tommy Samosky scored 12 points for the Big Macs, and Kenyon Lewis and Elliott Waller had 11 each.

McGuffey’s Trent Belleville scored a game-high 19 points. He was followed in the scoring column by C.J. Cole, who had 12 points.

Chartiers-Houston 63, Hopewell 53: Andrew Clark and Cam Hanley combined for 43 points as Chartiers-Houston defeated Hopewell 63-53 at the Mahoney Classic.

Chartiers-Houston (7-2) was clinging to a 42-38 lead after three quarters when Clark took control fo the game over the final eight minutes. He scored 10 of his points in the fourth quarter by making a three-pointer and converting all seven of his chances at the free-throw line. Clark was 13-for-14 at the line for the game and the Bucs made 23 of 32.

Hanley followed in the scoring column with 21 points.

Hopewell (3-7) put three players in double figures led by Josh Mikolos with 14 points. Tyler Sabo had 11 points and Enzo Columbo 10.

Burgettstown 68, Weir (W.Va.) 58: Ryan Lounder scored 27 points and Burgettstown pulled away down the stretch for a 68-58 victory over Weir (W.Va.) in the final of the Mahoney Classic.

The game, which was an intense and close affair throughout, wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter when Burgettstown outscored the Red Riders 24-18. Lounder scored eight of his points int he pivotal quarter.

Jacob Schrockman and Dante Gianfrancesco each scored 10 points for the Blue Devils (8-2), who have won four in a row.

Weir’s Keyshaun Faulks matched Lounder for game scoring honors with 27 points. Reed Reitter, who played for Burgettstown last season, had 10 points for the Red Riders (3-6).

Girls results

Washington 70, McGuffey 36: Carley Allen and Torri Finley combined for 43 points as Washington defeated McGuffey 70-36 at the Mahoney Classic.

Allen led the way for Wash High (5-3) with a game-high 26 points. She scored 14 of those in the first half, helping the Little Prexies forge a 43-15 lead.

Finley finished the game with 17 points.

McGuffey (3-8) received 10 points eahc from Rachel Shingle and Emily Durila.

Chartiers-Houston 42, South Side Beaver 23: Chartiers-Houston had too much Alexa Williamson and too much defense for South Side Beaver.

Williamson scored 31 points and dominated on the glass as Chartiers-Houston rolled to a 42-23 victory.

The win improves C-H to 7-3 overall. The Bucs have not losing to an opponent from Pennsylvania since dropping its season opener.

Chartiers-Houston led 19-7 at halftime and 31-13 after three quarters. SSB (7-4) had its four-game winning streak snapped.

South Fayette 56, Winchester Thurston 50: South Fayette rallied in the second half to defeat Class A power Winbchester Thurston 56-50 in the Mt. Lebanon Hoops for the Cure event.

Winchester Thurston (3-3) led 27-22 at halftime but South Fayette battlewd back and led 35-33 after three quarters.

Jordyn Caputo led South Fayette with 17 points. Maura Castelluci followed with 16 points and Sam Kosmacki had 14 for the Lions, who are 6-3 and have won five in a row.

Winchester Thurston’s Mia Thorpe scored a game-high 19 points and Ayanna Townsend had 11.

Weir 40, Burgettstown 34: Weir held host Burgettstown to 16 points over the first three quarters and defeated the Blue Devils 40-34 at the Mahoney Classic.

Weir (4-7) led 21-12 at halftime and 27-16 after three quarters. Burgettstown (3-7) scored more points in the fourth quarter than it did in the first three combined but the Blue Devils had too big of a deficit to overcome.

Burgettstown’s Elle Havelka scored a game-high 15 points.

Sophia Mikula led Weir with nine points.

In other games: Our Lady of Scared Heart defeated Avella 63-23 at the Mahoney Classic. No game details were made available.
