Girls basketball roundup: Trinity moves to 5-0 in section

The Trinity High School girls basketball team continued to get strong play on offense from Alayna Cappelli and Riley DeRubbo as the Hillers remained undefeated in Section 3-5A with a 44-31 road win over Uniontown Monday night.

Cappelli scored a game-high 18 points and DeRubbo contributed 13 points as the Hillers moved to 5-0 in the section and 9-3 overall. They have won seven consecutive games against WPIAL opponents.

Trinity took control of the game in the first half, leading 18-9 after one quarter and 30-13 at halftime.

Uniontown (1-3, 4-7) closed to within 35-25 after three quarters but could not make a push over the final eight minutes.

“We came out flat at the start of the second half and let them get back in the game,” Trinity coach Bob Miles said. “But this was a road win in a section game and those are always good.”

Mya Murray and Kelsea Rose each scored 10 points for Uniontown.

Trinity has a nonsection game at home tonight against Thomas Jefferson (9-1), the top-ranked Class 5A team in the WPIAL.

Burgettstown 52, New Brighton 28: Emily Prasko’s double-doubled helped Burgettstown rout New Brighton, 52-28, in a Section 1-AA game.

Prasko scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Burgettstown (2-3, 4-7), which led 25-6 at halftime. Elle Havelka chipped in with 16 points.

Sydney Cook poured in 19 points for New Brighton (0-5, 1-10).

Greensburg Central Catholic 56, Bentworth 19:Anna Eisaman and Bela Skatell combined for 39 points and Greensburg Cenytral Catholic defeated host Bentworth 56-19 in Section 3-AA.

Greensburg CC (3-2, 4-6) held Bentworth to two first-quarter points and led 23-6 at halftime.

Eisaman led the Centurions with 24 points and Skatell followed with 15.

Jenna Vito scored 10 points for Bentworth (0-5, 2-8).

Belle Vernon 45, Mt. Pleasant 32: Lindsay Steeber scored a game-high 15 points and Belle Vernon remained undefeated in Section 3-AAAA with a 45-32 victory at Mt. Pleasant.

The Leopards (5-0, 8-3) started each half strong, forging a 10-4 lead after one quarter and turning a 23-17 halftime lead into a 34-25 advantage entering the final eight minutes.

Belle Vernon held Mt. Pleasant (1-4, 3-7) to only 15 second-half points.

In other games: Undefeated East Allegheny outscored visiting Charleroi 20-2 in the third quarter en route to a 69-27 victory that snapped the Cougars’ seven-game winning streak. East Allegheny is 4-0 in section and 10-0 overall. Charleroi is 4-1, 9-2. No other game details were made available.
