Basketball roundup: Cal uses strong finish to win at Carmichaels

Dru Miller scored 19 points and California pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 59-44 victory over host Carmichaels in Section 2-AA Wednesday night.

California (2-2, 7-5) led 24-20 at halftime and 38-34 after three quarters before outscoring the Carmichaels 21-10 in the pivotal fourth quarter. The Trojans have won three in a row.

Miller made five three-point field goals and Colin Phillips scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Carmichaels (0-4, 6-5) received 13 points from Matt Barrish.

Trinity 75, Upper St. Clair 63: Trinity erupted in the final four minutes to outscore Upper St. Clair, 23-9, in the fourth quarter that sealed a 75-63 victory in a non-section game.

Zach Ecker scored 10 of his career-igh 25 points and Stewie Schultz had eight of his 17 in the fourth quarter for Trinity (8-3). Joey Koroly scored 11 points and Dylan Kern 10. Ecker pulled down 12 rebounds.

Upper St. Clair (7-6) was led by Chris Pantalis’ 13 points. Kyle Meinert added 12 points and Quentin Nelson 11.

Wash High 64, Deer Lakes 52: Dan Ethridge led all scorers to push Wash High to a 64-52 non-section win over visiting Deer Lakes.

Ethridge, a 6-4 junior forward, scored 26 points as Wash High (7-3) won their second game in as many days, as the Prexies beat Burgettstown 71-58 Tuesday. Sophomore guard Zahmere Robinson followed Ethridge in scoring with 16 points.

The Prexies, normally a low scoring team, led 22-14 after the first quarter and continued their high-scoring output in the second quarter with 19 points to lead by 18 at halftime.

Deer Lakes (6-5) outscored Wash High 29-23 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for a comeback.

South Side Beaver 79, Beth-Center 54: South Side Beaver scored 20-plus points in each of the first three quarters to outscore Beth-Center 79-54 in a non-section game in Fredericktown.

The Rams (5-7) led the Bulldogs (4-8) by 23 points at halftime, and B-C was outscored by two points in the second half.

Jake McDougal led SSB with 25 points, while Logan English and Nate Statler followed with 20 and 15, respectively.

Andrew White led the Bulldogs in scoring with 12 points, while Easton McDaniel also scored in double digits with 11 points.

Jeannette 67, Monessen 58: Anthony Johnson scored 22 points to power Jeannette past Monessen, 67-58, in a non-section game.

Robert Kennedy tossed in 15 points and Tre Cunningham 11 for Jeannette (7-1).

Lyndon Henderson had a game-high 24 points and Elijahwa Payne chipped in with 14 for Monessen (3-6).

Girls results

Chartiers-Houston 76, Shenango 24: Alexa Willaimson had another big game with 35 points as Chartiers-Houston crushed host Shenango 76-24 in a Section 1-AA game.

Chartiers-Houston, which has not lost to a WPIAL opponent since the season opener, improved to 5-0 in the section and 8-3 overall. The Bucs led 26-8 after one quarter and 46-14 at halftime.

Jules Vulcano scored 18 points for Chartiers-Houston and Madison Simpson also reached double figures with 12 points.

Madison Harden had 10 points to lead Shenango (2-3, 4-8).

Charleroi 54, Steel Valley 37: After shutting out Steel Valley in the first quarter, Charleroi coasted to a 54-37 non-section win over the Ironmen.

Leading 14-0 after the first quarter, Charleroi’s offense stayed consistent so to not allow a Steel Valley comeback, as the Cougars scored 10-plus points in every quarter.

Senior guard Maria Claybaugh led Charleroi (10-2) with 26 points and senior forward Sierra Short scored 13.

Morgan Farrah led Steel Valley (0-3, 1-10) in scoring with 18 points.
