Basketball roundup: Williamson leads C-H to comeback win over Burgettstown
Like most games, Alexa Williamson led Chartiers-Houston to a win. This time, Williamson, a Temple University commit, scored 33 points as the Bucs defeated host Burgettstown, 63-50, in Section 1-AA action.
Burgettstown (3-7, 5-11) jumped ahead early to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter. The Blue Devils continued to keep up with first-place Chartiers-Houston (9-1, 12-5), leading by three points at halftime.
The Bucs then scored 40 points in the second half, outscoring the Blue Devils by 16 points. Madison Simpson followed Williamson with 15 points.
Burgettstown was led by senior guard Malia Castellino’s 25 points. Emily Prasko chipped in with 10.
Peters Township 62, Baldwin 50: Isabella Mills and Makenna Marisa scored a combined 44 points to win on the road at Section 3-6A foe Baldwin.
Mills tied for the game-high in points with 24, while Marisa scored 20 points and dished out 11 assists.
Both teams came out fast to start the game, as Peters (6-1, 13-2) led Baldwin (0-7, 3-12) 20-15 after the first quarter. The Indians took a six-point lead into halftime, extended it to 10 points in the third quarter and outscored the Fighting Highlanders again in the fourth to win the game.
Baldwin’s Abbey Larkin scored 24 points in the loss.
Mt. Lebanon 64, Canon-McMillan 46: Mt. Lebanon’s Haley Sabol led the Blue Devils to a 64-46 Section 3-6A win at Canon-McMillan.
The sophomore scored a game-high 24 points to pace the consistent Mt. Lebanon (5-2, 9-8) offense. The Blue Devils scored more than 12 points in every quarter, while also outscoring the Big Macs in every quarter.
Alyssa Hyland and Jamey Napoleon followed suit with 12 points apiece, while Nora Kogan tallied 11 points.
Izzy Allen led Canon-Mac (1-6, 9-7) in scoring with 12 points, while Erica Haught scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Washington 61, Aliquippa 34: Juniors Carley Allen and Torri Finley scored a combined 38 points to push Washington over visiting Aliquippa, 61-34.
Allen led the Prexies with 21 points, while Finley followed with 17 to win the Section 1-AA matchup.
Washington (6-2, 9-4) got off to a quick start, leading 14-6 after the first quarter. Though Aliquippa (0-10, 0-15) trailed by only eight at half, the Quips were outscored 35-16 in the second half and only scored five points in the fourth quarter.
Tanae Williams, a junior guard, paced the Quips with 10 points.
Jeannette 37, Beth-Center 32: Trailing by four points entering the fourth quarter, Jeannette outscored visiting Beth-Center 15-6 in the fourth quarter to take down its Section 3-AA foe, 37-32.
The Jayhawks were led by junior Dymond Crawford’s 21 points in the low-scoring affair.
Jeannette (4-6, 6-11) held Beth-Center (6-4, 10-6) to four points in the first quarter. The Bulldogs woke up in the second quarter, scoring 15 points to take a five-point halftime lead.
An even third quarter then turned south in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs.
Kinlee Whited led B-C with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Avella 48, Geibel 43: Despite Geibel Catholic’s Yourish twins combining for 26 points, the Gators lost a close Section 2-1A matchup, 48-43, to Avella.
Gabby Yourish scored a game-high 15 points, while Gillian Yourish tallied 11 points. The family performance wasn’t enough, though, as the Eagles came back from down four at halftime to win.
Geibel (4-3, 6-8) outscored Avella (4-3, 9-7) in both the first two quarters. The teams then combined for 10 points in the third quarter, before the Eagles scored 22 points in the fourth quarter.
Kenzie Keefer paced the Eagles with 14 points, while Bailey Lis followed suit with 12 points.
Serra Catholic 74, Bentworth 29: Rylan German scored a game-high 16 points as Serra Catholic defeated Bentworth 74-29 to stay atop the Section 3-AA standings.
Serra (8-1, 11-4) put away the Bearcats early after taking a 37-15 lead at halftime, then the Eagles outscored 27-4 in the third quarter.
Rayna Andrews also scored 12 points for Serra.
Bentworth (0-10, 3-13) was limited to single digits in three of the four quarters. Jenna Vito finished with 11 points.
West Greene 67, Mapletown 11: Madison Lampe, Elizabeth Brudnock and Kaitlyn Rizor all scored in double digits for West Greene to defeat Mapletown 67-11 in a Section 2-A game.
The Pioneers scored 27 first-quarter points and led 52-7 at halftime.
Lampe led all scorers with 19 points. Brudnock scored 12 points while Rizor finished with 11 for West Greene (7-0, 15-1).
Kayla Smith and Danielle Atwood each scored four points for Mapletown (4-3, 7-11).
Charleroi 61, South Side Beaver 35: Charleroi started the game on a 15-0 run as the Cougars went on to defeat South Side Beaver 61-35 in Section 2-AAA.
It is the sixth straight win for Charleroi (8-1, 15-2).
Maria Claybaugh scored a game-high 21 points for the Cougars, while Kaitlyn Riley had 19 points and Sierra Short chipped in 13.
Charleroi’s Aislyn Lee found many several of her high-scoring teammates with 12 assists.
Jess Barber and Sidney Payne scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, but South Side (5-4, 10-6) couldn’t rally from the first-quarter deficit.
Brownsville 47, McGuffey 46: Alexis Carson scored 24 points as Brownsville held off McGuffey to defeat the Highlanders 47-46 in a Section 2-AAA game.
Trailing 22-20 at halftime, McGuffey (1-7, 4-13) inched closer to cut the deficit to one point, 33-32, entering the final quarter.
But the two teams matched one another shot for shot in the final eight minutes to give Brownsville (2-7, 4-13) the nail-biting victory.
McGuffey was paced by Abby Donnelly’s 10 points.
Frazier 62, Carmichaels 57: Using a big second and fourth quarters, Frazier had four players to score in double figures as the Commodores defeated Carmichaels 62-57 in a Section 3-AA contest.
Frazier, who trailed after the first quarter 14-9, scored 20 points in the second quarter to take a 29-28 lead into halftime.
The Commodores then, after being outscored in the third quarter, scored 22 points in the final eight minutes to retake the lead.
Brooke Poling led Frazier (6-4, 9-6) with 10 points. Queenesha Isaac had 14 points, Sierra Twigg scored 12 and Ashley Moger chipped in 11 points.
Kristina Aeschbacher led all scorers with 22 points for Carmichaels (1-9, 4-13). Megan Walker also finished with 12 points for the Mikes.
Trinity 64, Greensburg Salem 31: Trinity churned out another solid defensive effort to defeat Greensburg Salem 64-31 in a Section 3-5A game.
Limiting the Lions to single digits in three of the four quarters, Trinity (9-0, 15-3) led 33-13 at the half.
Riley DeRubbo scored 19 points and collected eight assists for the Hillers. Alayna Cappelli rounded out the dynamic backcourt with 17 points. Julia Chakos had 13 points, while Allie Score finished with 10.
Dynamic Greensburg Salem (3-6, 6-10) Megan Kallock finished with 17 points, the only scorer in double digits for the Lions.
Shenango 55, Fort Cherry 37: Shenango scored 38 points in the second half to win back-to-back games for the first time this season as it defeated Fort Cherry 55-37 in a Section 1-AA game.
Madison Harden paced the dangerous second-half offense for Shenango (5-5, 7-10) with 21 points to lead all scorers.
McKenzie Faure and Karis Zafaras each scored 10 points for Fort Cherry (6-4, 11-6).
The Rangers led 19-17 at halftime.
Monessen 33, Jefferson-Morgan 31: Quitarah Hardison scored a game-high 16 points as Monessen held off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt from Jefferson-Morgan to defeat the Rockets 33-31 in Section 2-A and end a 10-game losing streak.
Tied at halftime, Monessen (1-6, 2-14) scored 12 points in the third quarter to take a 24-17 lead into the final eight minutes.
Jefferson-Morgan (1-6, 2-14) nearly ended its seven-game losing streak with 14 points in the fourth but was held off by the Greyhounds.
Katey Wolfe led J-M with 10 points.
South Fayette 73, Montour 59: South Fayette scored 30 points in a high-scoring second quarter to defeat Montour 73-59 in a Section 1-5A game.
It’s the Lions fourth consecutive victory.
Maura Castelluci led South Fayette (6-1, 10-4) with 24 points. Maddi Gutierrez and Sam Kosmacki each reached double figures with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Lions big second quarter gave them a 40-31 at halftime.
Montour (2-5, 6-11) was paced by the scoring of Courtney Tomas, who finished with a team-leading 24 points.
Belle Vernon 58, South Park 47: Lindsay Steeber made five three-pointers and scored a career-high 20 points as Belle Vernon defeated South Park 58-47 in a Section 3-4A game.
Steeber paced the Belle Vernon attack, which also featured Keira Boff and Taylor Kovatch in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Boff made all six of her free throws in the final minute to seal the victory for the Leopards. Kovatch also had 10 assists.
Belle Vernon (9-1, 14-4) has won its last six games.
South Park (6-4, 9-7) was paced by Maura Huwalt’s 18-point night.

Burgettstown 72, Chartiers-Houston 42: Without senior guard Cam Hanley, Chartiers-Houston couldn’t keep up with Burgettstown and fell in the non-section game, 72-42.
Burgettstown (13-3) started and ended the game hot, as the Blue Devils scored 24 points in the first quarter and 20 points in the fourth quarter.
After leading by nine points at halftime, the Blue Devils held the Hanley-less Chartiers-Houston (12-4) to two points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.
Ryan Lounder led all scorers with 15 points. Max Shaw added 13 points for the Blue Devils, while Andrew Clark scored 14 points for the Bucs.
In other games
The Ringgold girls basketball team won its third consecutive game with a 50-39 victory over Albert Gallatin in a Section 3-5A matchup. Waynesburg also fell to undefeated East Allegheny, 61-3, in a Section 2-AAA girls contest.
