Basketball roundup: West Greene girls wrap up another section title
Madison Lampe scored all of her game-high 22 points in the first half Monday night and West Greene’s girls basketball team rolled to the outright Section 2-A championship with a 70-22 road victory over Monessen.
West Greene (8-0, 16-1) has won 19 consecutive section games dating back to the 2015-16 season. The section title is the second in a row for the Pioneers and the fourth in school history.
The Pioneers had a huge first half against Monessen (1-7, 2-15), building a 22-6 lead after the first quarter and a 56-12 edge at halftime. Lampe scored 17 of West Greene’s 34 second-quarter points.
Kaitlyn Rizor scored 19 points for West Greene and McKenna Lampe tallied all of her 10 points in the first half.
Marqula Green was the leading scorer for Monessen with nine points.
Peters Township 49, Upper St. Clair 38: Makenna Marisa scored 9 of her game-high 21 points in the critical third quarter to propel Peters Township to a 49-38 victory over Upper St. Clair in Section 3 of Class 6A.
The win moves the first-place Indians to 15-2 and 7-1 in the section. Peters Township gets a rematch against Mt. Lebanon Thursday evening and a chance to avenge a 44-43 loss to the Blue Devils. The Indians have won five in a row and eight of the last nine.
Peters Township went 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the second half, wiping away a 19-18 deficit at halftime. PT was 11 of 14 for the game. Lillian Young and Isabella Mills each scored 13 points for the visiting Indians.
Kennedy Bayer led Upper St. Clair (4-4, 8-8) with 11 points.
South Fayette 76, Lincoln Park 33: South Fayette remained in first place in Class 5A Section 1 with a 76-33 thumping of host Lincoln Park.
The Lions (7-1, 12-4) had a big first half and again used balanced scoring to overwhelm Lincoln Park (1-7, 7-11) for the second time in less than two weeks. South Fayette led 46-15 at halftime.
Jordan Head led the Lions in scoring with 15 points and Skylar Aitken followed with 14.
Page Brown had 13 points for Lincoln Park.
Chartiers-Houston 58, Aliquippa 26: Chartiers-Houston’s Alexa Williamson did a little of everything as the Bucs remained tied for first place in Section 1-AA with a 58-26 victory over visiting Aliquippa.
Williamson, a Temple recruit, scored 43 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as C-H improved to 10-1 in the section and 13-5 overall. The Bucs led 37-13 at halftime and 54-18 after three quarters before scoring only four fourth-quarter points.
Avonna Henry scored 13 points to elad Aliquippa (0-11, 0-16).
Trinity 71, Laurel Highlands 32: Trinity held host Laurel Highlands to seven second-half points and pulled away for a 71-32 victory over the Mustangs in Class 5A Section 3.
The win keeps Trinity (10-0, 16-3) unbeaten in the section and one game in the loss column ahead of second-place Ringgold, which won at Greensburg Salem. The Hillers have won 25 consecutive section games dating back to the 2015-16 season.
Trinity led by only 33-25 at halftime as Laurel Highlands’ Taylor Smith had a hot hand, scoring a game-high 20 points. The Hillers clamped down on the Mustangs in the second half, outscoring the hosts 38-7.
Alayna Capelli led four Trinity players in double figures with 19 points. Riley DeRubbo followed with 17 points and five assists, Allie Scarfo had 15 and Jayme Britton finished with 12.
Laurel Highlands is 1-8 in section and 2-17.
Canon-McMillan 66, Baldwin 58: Tamara mathis led three Canon-McMillan players in double figures with 25 points, Izzy Allen had another double-double and the Big Macs defeated host baldwin 66-58 in Class 6A Section 3.
Canon-McMillan (2-6, 10-7) built an early double-digit lead and led the rest of the way, holding off several surges by Baldwin (0-8, 3-13).
The Big Macs led by 10 points int he first half before Baldwin closed to iwthin 34-31 at halftime. The C-M lead grew to 11 in the second half.
Allen finished with 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Nayah Williams contributed 11 points.
Abbey Larkin scored a game-high 28 points for Baldwin.
Ringgold 49, Greensburg Salem 38: Ringgold kept its section title hopes alive, and in the process dealt Greensburg Salem’s postseason chances a blow, by defeating the host Lions 49-38 in Class 5A Section 3.
Taylor Mendicino led a balanced offense for Ringgold by scoring 10 points. Ashley Briscoe was right behind with nine points. The Rams improved to 8-1 in section and 13-5 overall. Ringgold made only six field goals in the first half, which ended with the Rams leading 22-17. Ringgold made 10 of 14 free throws in the half.
Megan Kallock scored a game-high 15 points for Greensburg Salem (3-7, 6-11).
Carmichaels 68, Bentworth 36: Megan Walker scored 26 points and Carmichaels had a strong finish to each half as the Mikes pulled away for a 68-36 victory at Bentworth in Section 3-AA.
Carmichaels (2-9, 5-13) led 17-13 after one quarter before outscoring Bentworth 19-8 in the second quarter for a 15-point edge at halftime. After each team was held to five points in the third quarter, Carmichaels erupted for 27 points over the final eight minutes.
Walker led three Mikes in double figures. Kristina Aeschbacher and Kylie Sinn each contributed 11 points.
Bentworth (0-11, 3-14) was led by Jenna Vito’a 10 points.
OLSH 65, Washington 44: Kennedy Nichol scored a game-high 25 points and Our Lady of Scared Heart held Washington scoreless in the first quarter en route to a 65-44 victory over the Prexies in Section 1-AA.
It was the second win over Washington in three days for OLSH (10-1, 16-2), which is tied with Chartiers-Houston for the section lead. The Chargers shut out Washington in the third quarter Saturday and this time OLSH forged a 13-0 lead after the opening quarter.
The Prexies played OLSH even over the final three quarters but couldn’t overcome the bad start. Carley Allen scored 21 points to lead the Wash High offense and sophomore Randi Thomas reached double figures with 13 points.
Jocelyn Nagy scored 17 points and Ashley Norling had 14 for OLSH, which has won 10 straight.
Fort Cherry 44, Burgettstown 42: Juniors McKenzie Faure and Abby Cooper combined for 28 points and Fort Cherry helped its postseason chances with a 44-42 victory over visiting Fort Cherry in Section 1-AA.
The win gives Fort Cherry a 7-4 record in section. The Rangers are 12-6 overall. Burgettstown (3-8, 6-12) was eliminated form playoff contention.
Faure led FC with 16 points and Cooper was right behind with 12. The Rangers forged a 16-5 lead after one quarter but Burgettstown battled back and closed to within 25-20 at halftime. Fort Cherry led 33-28 entering the fourth quarter and Burgettstown pulled to within 43-42 and had possession of the ball for the final shot. The Blue Devils missed, Fort Cherry rebounded and the Rangers added on a free throw to make it a two-point game.
Malia Castellino matched Faure for game scoring honors with 16 points. Emily Prasko had 15.
Charleroi 68, Waynesburg 26: Sierra Short had a double-double to help Charleroi overwhelm Waynesburg, 68-26, in a Section 2 game in Class AAA.
Short had a season-high 19 points to go with 12 rebounds for the Cougars (9-1, 16-2), who led 21-6 after one and 34-16 at halftime. Kaitlyn Riley scored a game-high 20 points, Bella Skobel tossed in 13 points, Maria Claybaugh added 12 points and Aislyn Lee chipped in with 11 assists.
Waynesburg fell to 4-13, 1-7 in the section. Jordan Sibert led the Raiders with 11 points.
SS Beaver 56, McGuffey 39: Four players reached double figures as South Side Beaver ran past McGuffey, 56-39, in a Section 2 game in Class AAA.
Sid Payne led all scorers with 18 points for the host Rams (6-4, 11-6). Jess Barber tossed in 12 points, Carissa McNery 12 and Rachel Pieto 11 for SSB.
Mikalah Maxwell and Abby Donnelly each scored 10 points for McGuffey (1-8, 4-14).
Mapletown 63, Hundred 22: Kayla Smith contributed a double-double to help Mapletown rout Hundred (W.Va.) in a non-section game.
Smith scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Mapletown (8-11). Bree Switalski tossed in 14 points and Morgan Williamson added 11 points.
Katherine Henderson led Hundred with seven points.
Belle Vernon 60, Derry 37: Kelsey Green had a double-double to help Belle Vernon power past Derry 60-37 in a Section 3 game in Class 4A.
Green had 13 points and 15 rebounds for Belle Vernon (10-1, 15-4). Rachel Wobrak chipped in with 13 points.
Derry (1-10, 1-16) was led by Kelly Kamryn’s 14 points.

Jeff-Morgan 73, Avella 42: Jefferson-Morgan sank 11 three-point field goals during a 73-42 rout of Avella in a non-section game.
Jalen Torres scored 25 points with the help of five threes for Jeff-Morgan (8-1). D.L. Garrett scored 23 points with three three-pointer and Devin Stoneking had 18 points and two from behind the arc.
Zack Cannon scored 12 points on four threes for Avella (2-12) and Matt Craig added 10 points.
