Small college basketball roundup: Moore’s 1,00th sparks W&J women to win
Senior point guard Amirah Moore scored a game-high 25 points. including her 1,000th career point, and Washington & Jefferson pulled away in the second half for a 62-42 victory over Westminster in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Wednesday night at Henry Memorial Center.
Moore became the 17th player in W&J women’s basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
The Presidents (11-2, 17-3) didn’t shake Westminster (3-10, 7-13) until midway through the third quarter. W&J led 34-25 at halftime but Westminster scored the first six points of the second half to make it a three-point game.
The Presidents then went on an 11-1 run, with Moore scoring five points, to open a 45-32 lead and Westminster didn’t have enough offense to fuel a comeback. The Titans were held to only 12 field goals in the game and 17 second-half points.
No Westminster player scored more than eight points.
Lauren Gilbert had 12 points for W&J and Alie Seto had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Moore made nine of 11 free throws.
Saint Vincent 71, Waynesburg 68: Maria Benvenuti scored 18 points and Saint Vincent held off a second-half charge by host Waynesburg to edge the Yellow Jackets 71-68 in a PAC game.
Saint Vincent (10-3, 13-7) closed the first half with a 19-5 run to build a 16-point lead, then had to withstand a 44-point second half by Waynesburg (7-6, 11-9) and a 30-point performance by the Yellow Jackets’ Addy Knetzer.
Saint Vincent led 40-24 at halftime but was held to only eight third-quarter points as Waynesburg closed to within 48-44. The Yellow Jackets trimmed Saint Vincent’s lead to three points twice during the fourth quarter before Mackenna Drazich made a three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining that pulled Waynesburg to within 70-68.
Saint Vincent then missed two free throws, giving Waynesburg a chance to tie or take the lead but the Yellow Jackets committed a turnover that set up a free throw by the Bearcats’ Maria Morgan with eight seconds left. Waynesburg was unable to overcome 29 turnovers compared to Saint Vincent’s 14. The Bearcats attempted 22 more shots than the Yellow Jackets.
Knetzer made 13 of 18 shots and grabbed nine rebounds. Drazich finished with 17 points and Rachel Eng had 13. Monica Starre led Waynesburg with 11 rebounds and seven assists.
Men’s results
Saint Vincent 77, Waynesburg 70: Kyle Evans scored 24 points and Saint Vincent rode a strong start to the second half to a 77-70 road victory over Waynesburg in a PAC game.
It was the eighth consecutive loss for Waynesburg (3-10, 7-13), though the Yellow Jackets did lead 34-33 at halftime. Saint Vincent (11-2, 14-6) scored 20 of the first 28 points in the second half and Waynesburg never got closer than sevne points the rest of the game.
Jon Knab, with 22 points, was the only Waynesburg player to scored in double figures. He made four of the Yellow Jackets’ seven three-pointers.
Saint Vincent made two fewer field goals than Waynesburg but had a huge edge at the free-throw line. The Bearcats were 20 of 32 compared to the Yellow Jackets’ 5-for-6.
Westminster 72, Wash & Jeff 58: Cameron Kane-Johnson scored 13 points and Westminster used a 13-0 run in the second half to pull away and defeat host Washington & Jefferson 72-58 in a PAC contest.
Westminster (9-4, 15-5) broke open a close game with a 13-0 run that opened a 56-41 lead for the Titans with eight minutes remaining.
Brian Lindquist scored a game-high 15 points for W&J (2-11, 3-17) and Sean Stinelli had 14 and four of the Presidents’ nine three-pointers.
