Riske back on court for busy day
McMurray native Alison Riske won her opening round match Tuesday at Wimbledon and will be back on the court today in both singles and doubles competition.
Riske won her first match in a major since Wimbledon last year when she steamrolled Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round. She will play Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, who upset No. 6 seed Caroline Garcia of France 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the opening round. It was the second time this year that Bencic has knocked off a top-10 seed in the opening round of a major.
This will not be the first meeting between Riske and Bencic in a major tournament. Bencic ousted Riske in the 2016 Australian Open. In Riske’s lone WTA tour championship, the 2014 Tianjin Open in China, she defeated Bencic in the finals.
Riske and Olga Savchuk of Ukraine were leading their women’s doubles match against Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and China’s Xu Yifan 7-6, 2-6, 3-2 when the opening round match was suspended Wednesday. That match is scheduled to be completed today, giving Riske two matches in one day.
