At The Meadows
In his first start at The Meadows, Windsong Leo extended his winning streak to four with a front-end, 1:50.3 victory in Saturday’s $18,000 Preferred Handicap Pace.
When Ronnie Wrenn, Jr. gave Windsong Leo a comfortable 56 opening half, the 6-year-old Jereme’s Jet-Windsong Goldie gelding had plenty left in the tank. Born Of Fire launched a gallant first-over bid that fell a length short while Phoenix Warrior N rallied for show.
Windsong Leo soared over $300,000 in career earnings, a career that includes wins at 11 different pari-mutuel tracks: Charlottetown, Flamboro Downs, Freehold, Georgian Downs, Grand River, London, the Meadowlands, The Meadows, Mohawk, Woodbine, Yonkers.
Ron Burke trains Windsong Leo for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Phillip Collura. Jim Pantaleano and Wrenn each collected three wins on the 13-race card.
Newgarden has pole position in Toronto
Josef Newgarden took advantage of a rapidly drying track Saturday afternoon to take the pole position for the IndyCar race at Toronto.
Newgarden passed Scott Dixon by just 0.1964 seconds after gambling on a slow start in the final qualifying run. A light drizzle made it seem like he’d miscalculated with Dixon getting a sizable lead, but the rain let up and the 27-year-old Newgarden found his tires gripping better. As the last car left on the Exhibition Place course, Newgarden pushed his car to the limit to knock Dixon off on his final lap.
