O’FALLON, Mo. – Washington pitcher Chase Cunningham pitched seven strong innings for the third consecutive start and the Wild Things defeated River City, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game series Friday night.

Cunningham (4-3) surrendered six hits but limited the Rascals to two runs, both scoring on a JD Hearn double in the sixth inning.

BJ Sabol and Zach Strecker each pitched an inning of relief to secure the victory. It was Strecker’s 12th save of the season.

The Wild Things provided Cunningham with an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Roman Collins hit an RBI single to open the scoring. Carter McEachern scored from third when Mike Jurgella, the Rascals catcher, tried throwing out a runner on a steal attempt, but the ball trickled into the outfield to give Washington a 2-0 lead.

Hector Roa and Reydel Medina extended the lead in the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs to make the lead to 4-0.

Hector Hernandez (8-3) suffered his third loss in July for River City.
