Wild Things sweep FL’s weekly awards

The Wild Things are the hottest team in the Frontier League, having won seven consecutive games to move into first place in the East Division. So it should come as no surprise that the Wild Things swept the league’s weekly awards Monday.
Center fielder James Harris was named the Frontier League Player of the Week while Chase Cunningham was named the Pitcher of the Week. It is the first time in more than three years that Washington players swept the two awards.
Harris was one of several Wild Things who had big weeks at the plate as Washington scored 56 runs during its homestand that included sweeps of Traverse City and Joliet.
Harris went 11-for-24 and had five extra-base hits, including a double, two triples and two home runs, one of which was a grand slam in Washington’s 23-1 thumping of Traverse City Thursday night.
The former first-round pick drove in 12 runs and scored eight times. He also stole four bases, giving him 11 on the season.
Harris leads the Frontier League in triples (6) and RBI (32). His seven home runs rank third.
Cunningham did not have a win during the week but pitched seven innings of one-run ball Friday night against Joliet. He allowed only two hits and struck out nine, which matched his career high. In his third year with Washington, Cunningham has a 1-2 record with a 3.17 ERA.
Washington resumes play tonight in Sauget, Ill., against the Gateway Grizzlies. The Wild Things made one roster move Monday, placing pitcher Mike Anthony (0-2, 5.62) on waivers and signing Braxton Morris, a rookie infielder out of Morehead State. Morris helped Morehead State to the Ohio Valley Conference championship this season. The Eagles advanced to the NCAA Regional at Clemson.
A native of a native of Albertville, Ala., Morris batted .367 this spring and had career highs with seven home runs and 59 RBI. He struck out only 26 times in 267 at-bats.
