Girls Track & Field MVP – Brenna Cavanaugh
Brenna Cavanaugh’s attempt to defend her PIAA title in the Class AA 100-meter hurdles was dashed when she clipped the final two hurdles and finished fourth at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University over Memorial Day weekend. Cavanaugh crossed with a time of 14.58. The senior from Bentworth High School did defend her title in that event at the WPIAL Championships. Cavanaugh, headed to Eastern Michigan University next fall on a track scholarship, won the 100 hurdles last year at the state tournament in dramatic fashion. She tumbled over the final hurdle in the semifinals but was still the last qualifier. Cavanaugh won the PIAA gold from Lane 8, a spot usually reserved for the slowest runner in the dashes and hurdles. Cavanaugh finished second in the state long jump this year with a leap of 17-10 1/2 and sixth in the triple jump with a 37-1 1/2 effort.
