Team of the Year runner-up – Washington football

After coming so close in recent seasons, Washington’s football team finally made it back to the WPIAL Class 2A finals and won the school’s seventh championship by rolling over top-seeded Steel Valley 37-10 at Robert Morris University’s Joe Walton Stadium. After going through the regular season undefeated and winning the Century Conference title, the Prexies defeated Freedom (42-9), East Allegheny (54-7), Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (19-14) to get to the WPIAL title game. Washington’s drive for a state title fell short with a wild loss to Wilmington (49-42) in the semifinals. The Prexies ended the season with a 13-1 record and their offense, led by running back Nick Welsh and a large and talented line, averaged 42.6 points per game. Welsh rushed for 2,324 yards, scored 32 touchdowns and was named the O-R’s Player of the Year. The Prexies’ defense, led by hard-hitting outside linebacker Isaiah Schoonmaker, held nine opponents to 10 points or less.
