Pirates edge Phillies on Osuna homer

1 min read

Pittsburgh ace Ivan Nova made his second start of the spring and pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out two as the Pirates defeated a split-squad Philadelphia Phillies team, 4-3, in Bradenton, Fla.

Jose Osuna hit his first home run in his only at-bat, a pinch-hit two-run shot in the seventh inning as the Pirates scored three times to win for just the second time this spring.

Brandon Leibrandt, the son of former major league pitcher Charlie Leibrandt, retired just two batters and gave up three runs on four hits in his first appearance for Philadelphia.

Phillies catcher Andrew Knapp hit a home run off Nova for a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Pirates tied it at 1-1. After drawing a walk, Sean Rodriguez went to third base on a Jordy Mercer single and scored on a wild pitch by Phillies pitcher Franklyn Kilome.

Philadelphia built a 3-1 lead but the Pirates won with a three-run seventh, capped by Osuna’s home run.

Left fielder Corey Dickerson, acquired in a spring trade with Tampa Bay, made his Pittsburgh debut but went 0-for-2.
