Runners take to streets for Pittsburgh Marathon
PITTSBURGH – More than 37,000 participants, representing all 50 states and 20 countries, hit the streets Sunday for the Pittsburgh Marathon races.
Fikadu Girma Teferi of Ethiopia won the men’s division in a time of 2:13:47, completing the 26.2-mile course ahead of Kenyans Kipkoech Ruto (2:13:52) and Kimutai Cheruiyot (2:14:57). It was the fastest winning time for the men’s race in five years.
Teferi finished in third place last year. It was his third victory in a U.S. marathon. He also won the Quad Cities Marathon in Moline, Ill., and the Columbus (Ohio) Marathon, both in 2016.
Sydney Devore of Lakeland, Fla., won the women’s race in 2:32:38, ahead of Susan Jerotich (2:34:19) and Sinke Biyadgilign (2:35:46). Clara Santucci of Dilliner in Greene County, a two-time Pittsburgh winner and a Olympic Trials qualifier in 2016, placed seventh in 2:47.44.
Marathon medical team said a total of 139 runners were treated at the finish line medical tent and medical aid stations along the course. The majority of the patients were treated for dehydration, cramps and temperature-related conditions, officials said.
