Baseball

Colin Caven cracked a 2-run home run to send the playoff-bound Peters Township past Baldwin, 4-2, in a Section 3 game in Class 6A.

Peters Township (6-6, 10-9) finished the regular season in a 3-way tie with Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon for third place.

Caven’s home run highlighted a 4-run third inning that erased a 2-0 deficit. Kyle Comini, who went 3-for-4, drove in a run and scored a run in the third. Luke Mary drove in a run with a single.

Jordan Rush doubled in a run in a 2-run second for Baldwin (4-8, 5-11). Trey Lufty had the other RBI.

Tom Colcombe struck out 5 to get the win. Peters Township had 12 hits and left 7 on base.

• Max Paterni went 3-for-4 and drove in 3 runs as Fort Cherry knocked off Beth-Center, 12-7, in a Section 1-AA game.

Fort Cherry (10-4, 11-5) scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh to ice the game. Hunter Terpack and Andy Nice each had a double for the Rangers. Cam Schaub hit a solo home run.

Anthony Dellapenna, Cam Parker and Cam Palmer each hit a double for B-C (7-7, 8-8), which missed making the playoffs by one game.

• Jake Mayer doubled twice and drove in 5 runs to power Ringgold to a 13-4 victory over Yough in a non-section game.

Luke Winterbottom went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI for the Rams (14-2), who led 7-0 after three innings. Anthony Vavasori went 2-for-3 and drove in 2 runs and Bo Haines was 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored.

Yough fell to 6-11.

• Tom Voelker hit a two-run home run in a 3-run fifth inning of Greensburg Central Catholic’s 6-2 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-A game.

Bruce Leonard struck out 7 and Ethan Bailey doubled for GCC (11-1, 12-2).

Zack Gamble and Bryce Bedilion each had a double for the Rockets (4-8, 5-8), who left 15 men on base, including the bases loaded in the first, third and sixth innings.

Softball

Jade Renner picked up her 11th win of the season, striking out 4, and went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI as West Greene closed the regular season with a 13-3 win in six innings over Bentworth in a non-section game.

Madison Lampe was 2-for-3 with a double, 3 runs scored, 4 stolen bases and 2 RBI for the Pioneers (16-4). Madison Renner added a hit, a run and 2 RBI. Kaitlyn Rizor was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Jersey Wise added a hit, 2 runs and 2 stolen bases. Linzee Stover went 2-for-3, scoring 3 times and stealing 2 bases.

Jess Rothka and Leah Lindley each had 2 hits for Bentworth (10-6).

At The Meadows

Glidinthruparadise dug deep late to hold off the determined challenge of Expose Yourself and capture Wednesday’s $22,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.

Each protagonist had been hard used before their head-to-head duel unfolded. Glidinthruparadise needed to reel off a 27 first quarter to make the front for trainer/driver Brian Zendt while Expose Yourself, saddled with post 9, found an early seat fourth before launching her uncovered bid. That set the stage for their confrontation in the lane, which Glidinthruparadise won by 3/4 lengths in a career-best 1:53.2. Dreamsteeler earned show.

Lisa Dunn owns Glidinthruparadise, a 5-year-old daughter of Yankee Glide-Chowda who won her second straight and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $184,408.

Tyler Stillings fashioned a training/driving double while Tony Hall, Aaron Merriman and Zendt each collected a pair of wins on the 13-race card.

Pony baseball

Ty Banco cracked a three-run home run to help Chambers Insurance edge Marthinsen & Salvitti in a Tuesday Washington Pony League game.

Emiliano Saldivar struck out 4 for Chambers Insurance.  Losing pitcher Max Dawson knocked in 2 runs for Marthinsen & Salvitti (3-1) and Mario Griffin went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

All-PAC softball

Washington & Jefferson junior second baseman Rachel Johnson was named to the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference First Team, headlining a group of five Presidents recognized by the league.

Johnson was the lone first team performer while junior pitcher Taylor Andres and senior first baseman Danielle Kochka landed on the second team. Senior shortstop Meghan Staab and senior designated player Jamie Smith were named honorable mentions.

The five players most since the 2014 softball team also had five.

• Bethany senior pitcher Cassie Weiss was named second-team All-PAC. Weiss received her fourth All-PAC award after posting a 2.44 ERA with 88 strikeouts over 80.1 innings pitched.

• Waynesburg sophomore catcher Rachel Skon was named to the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference First Team. Sophomore infielder Ashley Duborich was named to the Sportsmanship Team.
