Trinity’s bats overpower Gateway in 5A softball playoffs

BALDWIN – Trinity’s offense erupted in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A softball playoffs at the expense of Gateway.

The Hillers pounded out 14 hits, with one of them literally knocking out the Gators’ starting pitcher, during a 12-2 five-inning victory at Baldwin High School Wednesday evening.

The win moved Trinity’s record to 13-7 and set up a quarterfinal game against top-seeded West Allegheny at a site, date and time to be determined.

Gateway finished with an 8-7 record.

Gateway starting pitcher Maura Ryan took a liner off her arm in the first inning, during a three-run uprising by Trinity, and could not continue.

Trinity took advantage, scoring a run in the second, six in the third a run each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Marlaina Bozek went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Kylie Poland doubled and singled in three trips and Sloan Altman went 3-for-3. Payton Barr and Bailey McCullough each went 2-for-3 for the Hillers.

Samantha Hunter had a triple and hit a solo home run for Gateway.

  • Seton-La Salle defeated Beth-Center, 11-1, in a Class AA softball game. No further information was made available.
