Softball roundup: Chartiers-Houston handles Serra, again

Jaylese Lombardi hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Kaitlyn Dittrich pitched a four-hitter as Chartiers-Houston defeated Serra Catholic 7-1 in the WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinals Monday at West Allegheny High School.

Chartiers-Houston (16-2) advances to the semifinals Wednesday against Laurel winner.

The Bucs already had a 14-1 win in the regular seaosn over Serra (11-5) and they picked up right where they off in the postseason meeting. A leadoff single by Kasey Scears set up Lombardi’s two-run homer and that was Dittrich needed as she allowed only one run (unearned), struck out nine and did not issue a walk.

C-H made it 3-0 in the second by scoring a run on a throwing error. Karlyn Bayer’s two-out single scored Kaci Alderson to make it 4-0 in the third. Bayer scored on a double steal to make it 5-0.

Sears doubled in the fourth and scored on a double by Ella Brookman as the Bucs pushed their lead to 6-0. Bayer made it 7-0 with a solo homer in the fifth.

Serra’s only run came on a home run in the sixth.

Hempfield 3, Canon-McMillan 2: Canon-McMillan threw a scare into top-seeded Hempfield but the defending champion Spartans held off the Big Macs 3-2 in a Class 6A quarterfinal at Latrobe.

Maddie Uschock threw a six-hitter and struck out 11, and Ashley Orischak hit a home run as Hempfield improved to 18-3.

Losing pitcher Lauren Duke stymied Hempfield for much of the game. The freshman threw a five-hitter.

The Big Macs took a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring single by Olivia Ulan in the third inning. Hempfield answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and pushed its lead to 3-1 on Orischak’s solo homer.

Canon-Mac scored in the seventh to make it 3-2, getting a two-out run-scoring single by Grace Higgins. The Big Macs had the potential tying run in scoring position when the game ended.

Freeport 10, Waynesburg 4: Second-seeded and undefeated Freeport hit four home runs and overpowered Waynesburg 10-4 in the Class 3A quarterfinals at Plum High School.

The loss ends Waynesburg’s season with a 10-8. Record. The Raiders had won four of their last five, including a victory over Freedom in the opening round of the playoffs. Freeport (13-0) moves on to the semifinals.

Waynesburg’s Rachel Elsenheimer had a huge game in a losing cause. Elsenheimer went 4-for-4 with a solo homer in the first inning, two runs and two RBI. Bailee Shimek hit a two-run double for the Raiders that tied the score at 4-4 in the third inning.

Freeport, however, scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 6-4 lead, then Ashleigh Schmidt and Ally DeJidas each smacked two-run homers in the fourth to make it 10-4.

Claire Crytzer and Jenna Hildebrand also hit home runs for the Yellow Jackets. Paige Rutan had a double for Waynesburg.

Latrobe 10, Peters Township 0: Kiley Myers threw a no-hitter and snacked a home run as Latrobe defeated Peters Township 10-0 in a Class 6A quarterfinal game at Seton Hill University.

Myers had 10 strikeouts against the Indians (10-9), who scored 16 rusn in a first-round win over Seneca Valley.
