for all-star match
Washington & Jefferson midfielder Caroline Kallos has been one of 44 Division III representatives chosen for the 2018 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game.
The IWLCA hosts three senior all-star games each year representing each of the three divisions of the NCAA. This year’s games will be held on Tierney Field at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. The Division I teams will play first at 11:30 a.m., while the Division II game will follow at 1 p.m. and the Division III teams will cap the event off at 2:30 p.m.
Each division has 44 players that have been divided into two teams: North and South. Admission for all three games is free of charge and each game will be web-streamed live on IWLCA-tv.com.
Kallos, a two-time all-region performer who was also selected as the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season in 2018, was third in Division III with 4.59 caused turnovers per game and led the nation with 7.12 ground balls per game this year.

sets record
California University of Pennsylvania senior Julie Friend earned First-Team All-America honors and shattered her own Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record during the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday night during the second day of the NCAA Championships.
Friend received All-America honors in the event for third time in her career and closed her decorated career as a five-time NCAA All-American (four track & field, one cross country). She finished the race in fifth place with a record time of 10:04.37, shattering her own school and conference record set earlier this year by nearly 15 seconds.
- California University junior Jae’Len Means participated in the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash on Friday evening during the second day of the NCAA Championships.
Means placed seventh in his heat and finished 19th overall in the preliminaries with a time of 21.42 seconds. The top-two times from each heat, plus the next two-best times, advanced to the finals of the 200 meters.
In the majors
Kyle Hendricks limited San Francisco to one run and two hits over seven innings, Ben Zobrist lined a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh and the Chicago Cubs beat the Giants 6-2. Hendricks (4-3) struck out seven and walked two.
- Hanley Ramirez was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox, who are responsible for the $15.25 million remaining on his contract but avoided him triggering a $22 million salary for 2019.
Boston made the move to clear a roster spot for All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who was activated from the disabled list and was set to make his season debut against Atlanta after recovering from knee surgery. The 34-year-old Ramirez hit .163 with three homers and 12 RBIs in May.
- David Hess pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning, helping the Baltimore Orioles overcome a strong effort from Tampa Bay’s bullpen in a 2-0 win over the Rays.
