Maltony hired as Avella boys basketball coach

Mike Maltony said after resigning as the Washington High School girls varsity head basketball coach that he could see himself coaching again.
Less than two months later, Maltony is getting that opportunity after he accepted the boys varsity head basketball position at Avella High School.
“I’ve always wanted to coach (boys basketball),” Maltony said. “The last couple of years I’ve been thinking about it and wanted to try it before I retired.”
Maltony, who is 52, was the head coach at Washington for 12 seasons. He spent the three previous years to becoming the head coach as an assistant on the Prexies’ staff.
“It’s hard to pin down but it was just the right time to go,” Maltony said about leaving Wash High.
“(Going to Avella) gives a new energy not only for them but for me. They’ve been through rough times with a bunch of coaches over the past couple of years. Hopefully, I can bring stability. They also haven’t been that good recently. I want to change that.”
Assistant coach Mike Macik is following Maltony to Avella.
“It will be a nice transition because we’re familiar with one another about how we want to go about things. Economically, it was a pay cut. But if you are doing it for the money, then you are doing it for the wrong thing.”
Maltony compiled a record of 179-92 at Wash High.
“Right off the bat we have to have a positive and winning attitude,” he said. “With all the enthusiasm I’m planning on bringing I hope it rubs off.”
The last time Avella had a winning season was when it went 12-10 in 2010-2011. Since then, the Eagles have only reached double-digit victories once and are 34-120.
