W&J hires swimming and diving coach

Washington & Jefferson College announced Thursday it has hired Matt Rochna as its head head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach.
Rochna, who was an assistant at Ohio University, replaces Mike Orstein, who retired after 30 years at W&J.
“We are very excited to welcome Coach Rochna to our athletic department family,” W&J athletic director Scott McGuinness said. “He has championship experience as a student-athlete and coaching experience that has prepared him to lead his own program. Coach Rochna is devoted to the development of swimming and diving student-athletes and he is eager to start working with the Presidents.”
Rochna arrives at W&J following a season as the assistant Ohio. The Bobcats placed seventh at the Mid-American Conference Championships and placed 13 student-athletes on the All-MAC Academic team.
Prior to Ohio, Rochna was the assistant swimming and diving coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for two seasons. He was also the head coach for the YMCA of Indiana County Piranhas youth swimming team, where he specialized in working with senior-level swimmers (13-18 year olds).
A 2015 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Rochna competed on the men’s swimming. He helped the Bonnies to consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference championships (2013 and 2014), including breaking a school record in the 200 butterfly as a conference finalist. He was a team captain during his senior year.
“I would like to thank Director of Athletics Scott McGuiness for trusting in my vision to lead the Presidents as we move forward as a program,” said Rochna. “I am honored and beyond excited to join the Washington & Jefferson College athletic department as the next head men’s and women’s swimming & diving coach. As soon as I walked on campus, I felt a strong sense of community and pride for W&J athletics. I am thrilled to begin working with these driven student-athletes as we continue to achieve success in the pool, classroom, and community.”
Rochna has a bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure in sport studies with a concentration in human development and learning and a master’s degree from IUP in sports science/sport management. He was a six-time Dean’s List recipient in undergrad and was a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America.
