Small college basketball roundup: Barrett scores 41 as cal women win opener

After missing all of last season because of an injury, California University’s Seairra Barrett proved that she is back and better than ever.

Barrett, a senior forward, scored a career-high 41 points Saturday afternoon as California University won its season opener, 84-68, over West Liberty in the PSAC/Mountain East Challenge at the Convocation Center.

Cal will host Charleston (W.Va.) today at 3 p.m.

Barrett, who has more than 1,300 career points, made 19 of 36 shots, was 3-for-3 at the free-throw line and also grabbed seven rebounds as the Vulcans outscored West Liberty in all four quarters.

West Liberty’s Marissa Brown also had a standout performance, scoring 32 points on 14-for-17 shooting.

Barrett was one of three Cal players to score in doduble figures for the Vulcans. Jiahna Flood-Francis scored 12 points and Gina Vallecorsa had 11. Cal did not make a three-pointer (0-for-4) but converted 16 of 17 free throws and forced 29 West Liberty turnovers.

Wash & Jeff 78, La Roche 70: Washington & Jefferson opened its women’s basketball season with a 78-70 victory over host La Roche in a nonconference game.

The Presidents used a balanced offensive effort as five W&J players scored in double figures, led by Lauren Gilbert with 16 points.

Hannah Johnston followed with a career-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Johnston made 10 of 11 free throws. Both teams made 22 field goals but W&J was 30-for-35 at the free-throw line compared to La Roche’s 21 of 24.

W&J freshman Aleena McDaniel scored 14 points, and Danielle Parker and Kylie Mckennen each had 10.

Jenna Cole had 18 points for La Roche (0-1).

Men’s result

Notre Dame (Ohio) 73, California 61: California lost its second game at the season-opening Joe Retton Classic in Fairmont, W.Va., falling 73-61 to Notre Dame (Ohio).

Brent Pegram led Cal with 17 points. Collin MacAdams had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Jermaine Hall scored 11 points.

Cal led 36-30 at halftime.
