Small college basketball: W&J men get first victory

Washington & Jefferson earned its first win of the season Friday night by rallying in the closing minutes to beat Medaille 69-65 in the opening round of the WNY Knee and Orthopedic Surgery Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y.

W&J sophomore Cameron Seeman scored a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers. It was his third consecutive double-digit performance.

W&J (1-2) led 32-25 before Medaille (0-3) rallied and used a 7-0 spurt that put the the Mavericks up 64-57 with 2:24 to play. The Presidents answered in strong fashion, closing the game on a 12-1 run. Seven of the 12 points were scored by Seeman.

The Presidents regained the lead for good with 34 seconds left at 65-64.

Zach Queen scored nine points and Primo Zini had eight.

W&J will play Fredonia today at 2 p.m.

Hilbert 79, Waynesburg 63: Hunter Martineau led four Hilbert players in double figures with 13 points as the Hawks defeated Waynesburg 79-63 in the opening round of the Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament.

Hilbert (2-0) won the game by hammering Waynesburg (0-1) on the boards and taking advantage of the Yellow Jackets’ 1-for-16 shooting from three-point range.

Hilbert, which is 2-0 against Presidents’ Athletic Conference schools, defeating Grove City in the season opener, held a 24-4 edge in second-chance points as it outrebounded Waynesburg by a 51-23 margin.

The Yellow Jackets did a good job forcing Hilbert ball-handling mistakes as the Hawks committed 26 turnovers that Waynesburg turned into 33 points.

Waynesburg used 17 players and 14 of them cracked the scoring column. Matt Popeck was the only Yellow Jacket in double figures with 11 points.

The Yellow Jackets will play RPI (0-1) in the consolation game today.

Martineau scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half, when Hilbert forged a 39-27 lead.

Women’s results

Wash & Jeff 77, Dickinson 58: Danielle Parker had a double-double and led all scorers with 19 points as Washington & Jefferson dominated play in the second half to defeat Dickinson, 77-58, in the Springhill Suits Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Henry Memorial Center.

Parker, a Canon-McMillan graduate, collected 10 rebounds for the Presidents, who outscored Dickinson 46-28 in the second half to advance to today’s championship against Marietta at 4 p.m.

Lauren Gilbert and Alie Seto each scored 10 points for W&J (2-1). Seto also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

The Presidents only led by one point, 31-30, at halftime.

Kate Deutsch was the lone player for Dickinson (1-1) to score in double figures, finishing with 17 points.

Mount Union 76, Waynesburg 40: Tori Rappach scored 17 points and made half of Mount Union’s 10 three-point field goals as the Purple Raiders overwhelmed Waynesburg 76-40 in the opening round of the Behrend Tip-Off Tournament in Erie.

Mount Union (1-0) took control of the game in the second quarter and forged a 35-20 lead at halftime. The Purple Raiders then used their superior depth to wear down Waynesburg (0-3). Mount Union used 21 players with 18 of them scoring at least one point.

Jaime Sanborn also had 12 points for Mount Union .

Waynesburg used only eight players. Haley Porter led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points. Waynesburg was only 2-for-20 from three-point range and was outrebounded 55-27.
