Small college basketball roundup: W&J men win second in a row
Primo Zini came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points and help Washington & Jefferson to a 73-64 victory over Fredonia in the Medaille WNY Knee and Orthopedic Surgery Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Buffalo.
The Presidents (2-2) won both games in the event, which had predetermined matchups.
Jonathan DeVito had 12 points and Cameron Seeman scored 11 as W&J used a balanced offense. The Presidents shot 42 percent from the field and made 22 of 24 free throws. W&J led 29-20 at halftime and was able to overcome its 22 turnovers by holding Fredonia to 39 percent shooting. The Blue Devils attempted only 10 free throws.
Isaiah Ice scored a game-high 21 points for Fredonia.
RPI 75, Waynesburg 52: Tom Harvat scored a game-high 21 points as RPI handed Waynesburg its second consecutive double-digit loss to start the season, 75-52, in the consolation game of the Hilbert Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament in Hamburg, N.Y.
Waynesburg led 29-25 at halftime, but gave up 50 second-half points as RPI shot 58 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Matt Popeck was the only Waynesburg player to score in double figures. He finished with 14 points. The Yellow Jackets were 1-for-14 from three-point range in the second half.
Women’s results
Waynesburg 73, Fredonia 68, OT: Sophomore Andrea Orlosky scored 33 points to lead Waynesburg to its first win of the season, 73-68 in overtime over Fredonia in the consolation game of the Behrend Tip-Off Tournament.
Orlosky’s performance was the highest single-game scoring output by a Waynesburg player since the 2002-03 season and did so without the benefit of a three-pointer. Orlosky made nine-of-19 field goals and was 15-for-20 at the free-throw line. She also had a team-high eight rebounds and game-high five steals.
Waynesburg (1-3) trailed 18-9 after the first quarter. However, Waynesburg bounced back and led 53-46 entering the third quarter. An Orlosky free throw with 21 seconds left gave the Jackets a 64-63 edge. Fredonia (0-2) tied the score and forced overtime, then forged a 68-65 lead.
Orlosky, however, scored the final six points of the game in the last 90 seconds.
Elena McDermott scored 11 points and Brooke Fuller had 10 for Waynesburg.
Marietta 76, Wash & Jeff 63: Bailey Brooks scored 21 points as Marietta defeated Washington & Jefferson 76-63 to win the championship game of the Springhill Suites Tip-Off Tournament at Henry Memorial Center.
Marietta (2-0) took control of the game in the first half as the Pioneers led 29-18 after one quarter and opened a 51-25 advantage at halftime. The Pioneers shot 57 percent in the first half, when they made nine three-pointers.
W&J (2-2) pulled to within 65-50 after three quarters and twice in the fourth quarter cut the Marietta advantage to 11 points but never was able to close to within single digits.
Alexis Enochs had 16 points and Shay Lett had 14 for Marietta.
Lauren Gilbert matched Brooks for game scoring honors with 21 points to pace W&J. Gilbert had five three-pointers. Danielle Parker had 10 points and seven rebounds.
