Small college basketball: Waynesburg women rally to beat Pitt-Greensburg
Andrea Orlosky broke a tie by working inside for a basket with 25 seconds to play and Waynesburg defeated visiting Pitt-Greensburg 71-67 in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon.
Orlsosky’s basket capped a big fourth-quarter comeback by Waynesburg (2-3), which trailed 56-42 after three quarters. The Yellow Jackets outscored UPG 29-11 in the fourth quarter.
UPG (1-3) led 59-45 with 8:15 to play before Waynesburg went on a 15-4 run to close to within three points with less than three minutes remaining. Two free throws by Elena McDermott tied the score at 67-67 and Orlosky’s basket after a UPG turnover gave Waynesburg the lead. The Yellow Jackets sealed the win when Orlosky made two free throws.
Orlosky finished with a game-high 21 points. McDermott scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half. Erin Joyce also scored 16 points and Brooke Fuller had 12.
Maddie Sitler scored 17 points for Pitt-Greensburg, which committed 25 turnovers.
Waynesburg begins Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Wednesday at home against Grove City.
Men’s results
Hiram 81, Wash & Jeff 77: Hiram, led by Sherman Dean’s 24 points, edged visiting Washington & Jefferson 81-77 in a nonconference game.
The Presidents (2-4) led three and were within two points (79-77) with only 22 seconds left to play. Hiram (2-2) sealed the win when Austin Blatt made two free throws with 11 seconds remaining.
Cameron Seeman led W&J with a team-high 15 points and six rebounds. Seeman leads the Presidents with a 14.5 scoring average.
Zach Queen and Nicholas Campalong each scored 13 points and freshman Primo Zini had 12 points and five rebounds.
W&J begins Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Wednesday at home against Saint Vincent.
Mt. St. Joseph 83, Waynesburg 56: Jake Cropper scored 38 points and Mt. St. Joseph pulled away in the second half for an 83-56 victory over Waynesburg in the MSJ Tip-Off Classic that is being held in Cincinnati.
Mt. St. Joseph (1-2), which lost its first two games by an average of 29.5 points, led by only 38-30 at halftime.
Cropper made six three-pointers, 10 of 12 free throws and grabbed nine rebounds as MSJ shot 51 percent from the field and 54 percent from three-point range.
Waynesburg (1-3) was led by Brennan Smith, who scored 22 points. He was the only Yellow Jackets player to score in double figures. Waynesburg will play North Park (Ill.) today.
MSJ had four players score in double figures.
