Cal wins first game, stopping D&E
California University hit five free throws in the final moments and the Vulcans defense held Davis & Elkins without a point in the final two minutes to win their first game of the season, 63-55, in a nonconference game at the Convocation Center Tuesday night.
Nathaniel Chambers and Brent Pegram each sank two free throws in the final minute for Cal (1-3) to turn a four-point lead into an eight-point win.
Pegram led a balanced offensive attack for California with 15 points. Colin MacAdams had a double-double, 11 points and 12 rebounds, Jermaine Hall tossed in 11 points and Collins chipped in with 10.
Trevor English tossed in a game-high 20 points for Davis & Elkins (1-4) and Edmund Parker added 11.
Despite shooting just 28 percent from the field, Cal led Davis & Elkins, 32-25, thanks to sinking 6 of 7 free throw attempts. Davis & Elkins was 0-for-2 from the line.
Davis & Elkins tied the game, 51-51, with just over eight minutes to play but never led in the second half. Davis & Elkins scored only four points the rest of the way.
Cal outrebounded Davis & Elkins, 40-35. D&E committed 22 turnovers and Cal scored 27 points off them.
