Engel fills in, runs for 292 and 3 scores as Canon-Mac wins
IRWIN — Drew Engel, a wide receiver who was making his first start at running back, rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries Friday night as Canon-McMillan moved closer to a playoff berth in Class 6A with a 34-12 victory over Norwin in the Quad County Conference.
Alex Hendal rushed for 66 yards and added two scores for Canon-McMillan (2-4, 3-4).
The Big Macs’ defense made the day rough for Norwin’s passing game as it produced seven sacks. Davey Cooper led the way with three sacks and Connor McMahon had two sacks.
Engel, who was starting at tailback in place of injured Josh O’Hare and had only two carries all season entering the night, scored on runs of 14 yards in the first quarter, 15 yards in the second and nine yards for the final score of the game. Engel rushed for 155 yards on 18 carries in the first half.
Norwin used a safety and field goal to close to within 6-5, but C-M took control after Engel’s 15-yard score and a seven-yard blast by Hendal, both in the second quarter. Norwin pulled to within 20-12 in the final minute of the third quarter, but Hendal’s second TD, a 13-yard jaunt up the middle, ended the Knights’ comeback bid.
