Gannon uses ground game to upset Cal
CALIFORNIA – Marcus Jones rushed for 281 yards and two touchdowns, Jason Dambach passed for two scores, including a 94-yarder to Dontae Owens, and Gannon upset California 29-15 in a PSAC West football game Saturday afternoon at Adamson Stadium.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Cal (3-1, 4-3). The Vulcans entered the game tied for first place in the division with Slippery Rock.
Gannon broke a 15-15 tie late in the third quarter when Jones scored on an eight-yard run. Jones, who is Gannon’s all-time rushing leader, carried 38 times and helped the Golden Knights (2-2, 2-5) churn out 333 rushing yards.
Dambach, who completed nine of 21 passes for 167 yards, threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Owens in the fourth quarter to make it 29-15 with less than four minutes remaining.
Dambach and Owens hooked up for a 94-yard TD pass early in the third quarter to give Gannon a 15-7 lead.
Cal forged a 7-0 lead when Chad Livingston caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Noah Mitchell midway through the first quarter. Gannon, however, took a 9-7 lead after Jones ran 11 yards for a touchdown and Brian Strybel booted a 25-yard field goal in the final minute of the first quarter. The Golden Knights never trailed the rest of the way.
The Vulcans tied the score at 15-15 in the third quarter when Cam Tarrant caught a 23-yard TD pass from Mitchell and scored a two-point conversion.
Mitchell completed 21 of 38 passes for 239 yards and two scores.
