Grove City throws deep, beats Waynesburg
GROVE CITY – Grove City scored a touchdown on the game’s second play from scrimmage and never trailed as the Wolverines ended Waynesburg’s three-game winning streak by defeating the Yellow Jackets 28-3 Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Grove City quarterback Josh Ehst threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Cody Gustafson that gave the Wolverines a 7-0 lead only 40 seconds into the game.
Ehst completed only six passes but he did plenty of damage with them. Ehst and Gustafson connected again for a 68-yard TD less than six minutes to the game to give the Wolverines a 14-0 lead.
After Waynesburg’s Garret Guthrie booted a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter that pulled Waynesburg to within 14-3, Ehst threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Drake to end any chance of a Yellow Jackets comeback.
Ehst completed six of 11 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Gustafson caught four passes for 174 yards.
Wesley Schools, who capped the scoring with a seven-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, rushed for 163 yards on 30 carries.
Waynesburg’s offense fizzled for much of the day. Yellow Jackets quarterback Tyler Perone completed 19 of 39 passes for 195 yards and was intercepted three times. The Waynesburg grounded game netted only 100 yards.
Both teams are 3-3 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Grove City is 4-3 overall and Waynesburg is 3-4.
