Late TD lifts Waynesburg over Saint Vincent
A timely touchdown for the Waynesburg University football team helped it avoid a second consecutive loss, defeating Saint Vincent, 12-10, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Trailing for most of the game, Yellow Jackets’ quarterback Tyler Perone found Nick Moretti for a nine-yard touchdown to take the two-point lead with 4:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. The only other scores for Waynesburg, which is 3-4 in the PAC and 4-4 overall, were on a pair of field goals from Garret Guthrie.
Guthrie opened the scoring with a 39-yard field goal at 10:17 in the first quarter, but Saint Vincent answered just over three minutes later when quarterback Tekoah Guedes ran in from 36 yards to give the Bearcats a 7-3 lead.
After the teams exchanged field goals in the second quarter to give Saint Vincent a 10-6 lead at halftime, the Waynesburg defense then took over in the second half. The Yellow Jackets kept Saint Vincent scoreless, stopping them on seven straight drives, including three that began in their territory.
The Bearcats, who fall to 1-5 in the conference and 1-6 overall, missed a 47-yard field goal for the victory with less than one minute remaining in regulation.
