Benson’s hat trick propels Waynesburg

Gavin Benson scored three goals and Jack Church chipped in with three assists to help Waynesburg roll past East Allegheny, 6-2, in a first-round WPIAL Class AA soccer match Monday at Connellsville.

The Raiders, now 13-5, will play Deer Lakes in the quarterfinals Thursday ata site and time to be determined.

Benson scored twice in the first half as the Raiders built a 4-2 lead.

“Halftime played to our favor,” said said Waynesburg head coach Matt Blair. “We made a few adjustments and put our strength against their strength. We slowed them down and got the momentum back.”

Caleb Blair, Dalton Woods and Tyler Switalski each scored a goal. Chase Henkins picked up the win in goal.

East Allegheny ended its season with a 9-8 record.

Sewickley Academy 5, Monessen 2: Sewickley Academy broke open a close match with two goals in the final 20 minutes to down Monessen, 5-2, in a WPIAL Class A first-round match at West Allegheny.

Goals for Sewickley (13-4) were scored by Jack Wentz, Alex Gordon, Jack Dugan and Reece Balogh.

Cam Frolo scored twice for Monessen (9-5-2), which trailed 2-1 at halftime.

Deer Lakes 5, Beth-Center 0: Mike Sullivan scored two goals to lead Deer Lakes past Beth-Center, 5-0, in WPIAL Class AA soccer action.

AJ Dorman, Ryan Rogers and Ronan Renter each scored a goal. Deer Lakes held B-C to one shot on goal.

Deer Lakes plays Waynesburg in the quarterfinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.

South Fayette 2, Moon 0: South Fayette shut out Moon, 2-0, in a WPIAL Class AAA match. No further information was available.
