Weekly Honors
California University of Pennsylvania’s sophomore kicker Brian Alsobrooks was chosen as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Co-Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
Alsobrooks converted all five of his kick attempts, including three field goals, over the weekend in a 23-0 victory at Mercyhurst.
He made a career-long 36-yard field goal as time expired in first half. The 6-foot-2 sophomore also converted a pair of PAT attempts in the fourth quarter against the Lakers.
Alsobrooks has also served as the team’s punter and kickoff specialist this year, in addition to seeing time as the back-up quarterback.
- Julie Halula and Shayla Watkins (Charleroi High School graduate) of the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team were named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Halula was the lone President to score in both of W&J’s victories last week. The senior forward netted the first of the team’s season-high four goals in its 4-1 victory over Saint Vincent on Wednesday. In the following game against Westminster, Halula recorded the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to seal a 1-0 overtime triumph.
Watkins started both games in goal for W&J and earned a pair of complete-game victories. In the first of the two wins, the freshman keeper made five saves in the victory over Saint Vincent. Watkins then added seven more stops against Westminster to earn her third shutout of the year.
- For the second consecutive week, a member of the Washington & Jefferson volleyball team has been named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, with Madison Lydic taking down the honor this week.
Lydic helped guide the Presidents to three PAC victories last week, as she led the team with 35 kills and an impressive .346 hitting percentage on 78 total attempts. She also finished second on the team with eight blocks.
- Senior kicker Garrett Guthrie (Trinity graduate) was named this week as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Special Team Player of the Week for Waynesburg University.
Guthrie connected on the two longest field goals of his collegiate career to help lead Waynesburg to a 12-10 victory over the Bearcats. He hit from 39 and 40 yards, respectively.
Smith receives PSAC Champion Scholar Award
California University of Pennsylvania’s junior Ryan Smith was named as the of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion Scholar Award on Sunday evening at the league golf championships.
Smith currently boasts a 3.68 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). He appeared in all five events during the fall season while primarily playing at the first position in the lineup. Smith closed the fall with a scoring average of 77.2 strokes and recorded three top-20 finishes.
The PSAC Champion Scholar Award is modeled after the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award and honors the student-athlete with the top GPA that is competing at the site of each of the PSAC’s 23 team championship finals.
In the NHL
Michael Ferland scored in his fourth straight game and Sebastian Aho had an assist and set a franchise record for points in consecutive games to start a season as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Monday night. Defenseman Justin Faulk also scored for the Hurricanes, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Andreas Athanasiou scored for Detroit.
