South Fayette’s McConnell 4th at PIAA golf; Bentworth’s Dziak in top 10

YORK – Caroline McConnell of South Fayette placed fourth in the girls Class AA competition and was the top local finisher at the PIAA Individual Golf Championships that concluded Tuesday at Heritage Hills Resort.

McConnell shot 7-over 79 in the second round and finished the two-day event at 157, which was 10 shots behind state champion Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny.

Other local competitors and their finishes were South Fayette’s Luke Lestini, tied for 16th in Boys Class AAA; Bentworth’s Luke Dziak, tied for 10th, Carmichaels’ Matthew Barrish tied for 16th and Chartiers-Houston’s Jack Hritsko 31st, each in Boys Class AA and Carmichaels’ Remmey Lohr 14th in Girls Class AA.

McConnell was in contention for the win until a rough three-hole stretch on the back nine. She began the day in fourth place and played the front nine in 1-over 37 but ran into trouble on the par-5 No. 11, where she took a double bogey. McConnell played Nos. 11-13 in 5-over. In the opening round, McConnell played the same three holes at even par.

Dziak shot 76 in the second round to move up nine spots in the standings and his 156 total was only seven strokes behind state champion William Mirams of East Stroudsburg Notre Dame. Dziak’s 76 was the fifth-best round Tuesday among all Class AA golfers.

Barrish, after shooting 76 Monday, slipped to 83. Hritsko also shot 83.

Lestini shot 78 in the second round and finished 16 shots behind state champion Palmer Jackson of Franklin regional, who shot a blistering round of 4-under 67 Tuesday and finished 2-under for the tournament.

Lohr played her final round in 95.
