It’s Wild Things vs. Slammers for title
The Wild Things finally know their opponent for the Frontier League’s championship series.
Joliet received 6 2/3 shutout innings from Liam O’Sullivan and Danny Zardon hit a three-run homer as the Slammers defeated the River City Rascals, 6-0, Sunday night to win the best-of-5 first-round playoff series, 3-2.
Joliet will play Washington for the championship. The best-of-5 series begins Tuesday (7:05 p.m.) at Wild Things Park. Washington will host Game 2 Wednesday before the series moves to Joliet for Game 3 Friday. Game 4, if necessary, will be Saturday at Joliet. Game 5 would be played Monday, Sept. 17 at Wild Things Park.
Washington and Joliet tied for the East Division title, each finishing with a 54-42 record. The Wild Things swept Evansville in the first round of the playoffs. Joliet, after losing two of the first three games against River City, the West champion, was three outs away from being eliminated in Game 4 Saturday night when Zardon hit a two-run homer to give the Slammers a 2-1 win and force a decisive fifth game.
Zardon’s three-run homer in Game 5 came in the seventh inning and gave Joliet a 4-0 lead.
