Final surge, victory belong to Bentworth against C-H

ELLWSORTH — Trent Cavanaugh rushed for 120 yards and scored three touchdowns, Shawn Dziak threw two touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Owen Petrisek with 3:07 remaining, and Bentworth outlasted visiting Chartiers-Houston 24-21 in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

In what was the best local game of the night, the Bearcats and Bucs traded the lead until the final score of the contest. Cavanaugh had touchdown runs of 30 and 3 yards and caught a 24-yard scoring pass from Dziak. A 3-yard TD run by Cavanugh, who carried 16 times, gave Bentworth (1-1, 2-2) an 18-14 lead with 7:30 remaining.

Chartiers-Houston (1-2, 1-3) then drive down the field and regained the lead at 21-18 on a five-yard touchdown run by Seth Dunn with 4:10 remaining. Dunn also had a 2-yard scoring run in the first quarter and tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Tyler Blumen with one second left in the first half that gave the Bucs a 14-12 advantage.

After Dunn’s second touchdown run, Petrisek returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards into C-H territory, setting up his game-winning 16-yard touchdown from Dziak.

The teams then exchanged fumbles before Cavanaugh had a strip sack of Dunn and Bentworth recovered the fumble with about 1:30 remaining. The Bearcats were able to run out the clock.

Dunn had a big night, completing 13 of 26 passes for 225 yards. Blumen caught six passes for 110 yards.
