Jefferson-Morgan rolls past Avella
JEFFERSON — Jonathan Wolfe scored five rushing touchdowns and Jefferson-Morgan, sparked by two safeties, overcame a late first-half deficit and scored 36 unanswered points to beat Avella, 46-13, in the Class A Tri-County South Conference.
Avella (0-2, 1-4) used a touchdown pass from Owen English to Brandon Samol and English’s 1-yard TD plunge to take a 13-10 lead early in the second quarter. The score held until 3:30 was left in the first half when English was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety. Jefferson-Morgan (2-2, 2-3) also scored on a safety in the first quarter.
The Rockets took the ensuing free kick and scored when Wolfe ran in from seven yards with only 12 seconds left in the first half. A two-point conversion run gave J-M a 20-13 lead.
The second half was all Rockets as Wolfe scored on runs of two, five and 17 yards. Wolfe, who rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries, had a one-yard TD run in the opening quarter.
Jefferson-Morgan also scored when Jacob Broadwater returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown.
English had 122 rushing yards on 15 attempts for Avella.
