Unbeaten W&J starts fast, holds off Bethany
BETHANY, W.Va. – No. 12 ranked Washington & Jefferson jumped out to an early 14-point lead and held off a late charge by Bethany to defeat the upset-minded Bison 27-20 Saturday afternoon in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Jacob Adams completed 26 of 38 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns as W&J remained undefeated at 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Wide receiver Andrew Wolf caught a career-high 12 passes for 135 yards and a score, his nation-leading 13th of the season.
Adams hit tight end Jake Cullen for a nine-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter as W&J scored on its opening drive for the sixth-straight game. The lead was stretched to 14-0 in the opening quarter when Jordan West capped a six-play drive with a 21-yard dash to the end zone. W&J led 14-7 at halftime, after a six-yard TD run by Bethany’s Carlin Bason.
A punt by Jacob Sarver pinned Bethany near its own goal line early in the second half. After a three-and-out the Bison punted from their own end zone. Presidents defensive back Zac Quattrone raced in off the edge and blocked the punt and Jack Ryan fell on the loose football in the end zone for a touchdown to make it 20-7.
After a long scoring run by Bethany got the Bison back within one score, Adams capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive by connecting with Wolf for a 14-yard TD that made it 27-7.
