High school baseball roundup: C-H battles back in 7th to beat Carmichaels

Chase Bitz hit a two-run single that gave Chartiers-Houston the lead and Matthew Rieger followed with a two-run homer as the Bucs scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning and rallied to defeat Carmichaels 6-3 in the Class 2A Section 1 opener for both teams Wednesday.

Carmichaels (3-1 overall) had taken a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Nick Ricco hit a solo home run.

The Bucs, however, loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh. After a strikeout, Bitz’s two-run single gave C-H the lead. An error allowed another run to score and Rieger hit his home run.

Carmichaels scored one run in the bottom of the seventh.

Winning pitcher Josh Coletti pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out eight.

Gavin Pratt drove in two runs for Carmichaels.

Avella 17, Geibel Catholic 0: Senior right-hander Noah Taylor threw a four-inning no-hitter as Avella routed Geibel Catholic 17-0 in a Class A Section 2 game.

Taylor struck out eight, did not walk a batter and nearly finished with a perfect game. Geibel (0-1, 0-3) had only one batter reach base, that on an error.

Avella (1-0, 1-1) had eight hits including a double by Owen English.

Canon-McMillan 12, Upper St. Clair 0: Cam Weston fired a one-hitter and struck out eight and Canon-McMillan rolled to a 12-0 victory over host Upper St. Clair in a five-inning Class 6A Section 3 game.

Canon-McMillan (1-0, 4-2) had two big innings, scoring five runs in the second and six more times in the fifth.

Weston was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the Big macs at the plate. Alex Gregory and Jay Quinque each drove in two runs.

The lone hit by USC (0-1, 4-3) was by the leadoff batter in the first inning.

Peters Township 7, Baldwin 0:

Tom Colcombe allowed two hits over six shutout innings and Mark Lehman hit a three-double as Peters Township opened Class 6A Section 3 play with a 7-0 victory over Baldwin at Peterswood Park.

Colcombe, a senior lefthander, struck out 11 and walked only two as the Indians improved to 4-3 overall. PT led 1-0 before its scored four runs in the fourth inning. Three of the runs came on Lehman’s bases-loaded double.

Jackson McCloskey had two hits and two RBI for the Indians.

Baldwin is 2-1 overall.

Ringgold 7, McKeesport 0: Chase Angotti and Jake Mullen combined on a three-hit shutout, Dylan Wujcik and Jake Rongaus each drove in two runs and Ringgold won its Class 4A Section 3 opener, 7-0, at McKeesport.

Angotti scattered three hits over six innings and struck out six. The Ringgold offense supported him by scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Koby Bubash had a double, the Rams’ lone extra-base hit. Busbash was 2-for-4 with two runs. Bobby Boyer had three singles.

Ringgold is 2-2 overall. McKeesport slipped to 1-2.

Beth-Center 11, Southmoreland 6: Beth-Center’s Anthony Dellapena accounted for seven runs as the Bulldogs defeated host Southmoreland 11-6 in the Class 2A Section 1 opener for both teams.

Dellapenna went 2-for-3, scored four runs and drove in three with a home run and double as Beth-Center (1-0, 1-2) forged a 6-0 lead before Southmoreland (0-1, 1-2) mounted a comeback and pulled to within 8-6 after six innings.

Beth-Center had eight hits but five went for extra bases. In addition’s Dellapenna’s hits, Cameron Palmer, winning pitcher Dylan Dingle and Dominic Fundy each smacked a double. Palmer had two hits and drove in four runs.

West Greene 5, Jefferson-Morgan 4, 8 inn.: Ben Jackson doubled home Corey Wise in the bottom of the eighth inning to give West Greene a 5-4 win over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-A game.

Jackson also hit a solo home run for the Pioneers (1-0, 3-10. Jordan Cooke doubled and Joe Reed tripled.

Losing pitcher Bryce Bedilion tripled for J-M (0-1, 0-4).

Bentworth 12, Mapletown 2: Bentworth needed only five innings to down Mapletown 12-2 in a non-section game.

Jacob Kisner went 3-for-4 withe two runs and an RBI for Bentworth (3-3) and Mike Vittone went 2-for-3 and knocked in two.

Mapletown is 0-3.

Trinity 5, Albert Gallatin 2: A 5-run fifth was all Trinity needed to stop Albert Gallatin, 5-2, in a Section 3 game in Class 5A.

Four different players drove in a run for the Hillers (1-0, 5-3). Camden Zaken went 3-for-4 and A.D. Nelson and Forrest Havanis each had two hits. AG is 0-1, 1-2.

Fort Cherry 10, Burgettstown 3: Fort Cherry broke a tie by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Burgettstown 10-3 in Class 2A Section 1.

Shane Smith went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for Fort Cherry (1-0, 4-1). Matt Cook drove in a pair of runs to back to the winning pitching of lane Miller, who struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings of relief.

Burgettstown (0-1, 2-2) scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 3-3. Scott Ferris had two hits for the Blue Devils.

Keystone Oaks 16, Waynesburg 3: Mason Brooks did a lot of damage for Keystone Oaks against Waynesburg.

Brooks went 3-for-5 with a triple and double, and also threw four strong innings, as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 16-3 victory in five innings in Class 3A Section 3.

KO (1-1, 2-2) scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed, scoring eight times in the fourth.

Brooks struck out seven. Luke Robinson belted a triple for Waynesburg (0-1, 1-2).

Seton LaSalle 7, South Fayette 3: South Fayette couldn’t muster another comeback after falling behind in the first inning, falling to Seton LaSalle, 7-3, in a non-section game.

Seton LaSalle (4-1) scored three unearned runs in the top half of the first and rode a solid pitching performance from Drew Lafferty to hand the Lions their first loss of the season. Lafferty went five innings, gave up a pair of runs and struck out four.

The final hitter in the Rebels’ lineup, Gabe Finale, torched South Fayette (6-1) with three hits, two RBI and scored once. Finale had the two lone extra-base hits for Seton LaSalle, a triple in the second inning and an RBI double in the fourth.

Ryan McGuire had a pair of doubles for the Lions.

Softball

West Greene 13, Monessen 0: Jade Renner became the winningest pitcher in West Greene history in a 15-0, three-inning win over Monessen in a Section 2-A game. Renner won her 40th game, one more than Rachel Burns did before graduating in 2009.

West Greene improved to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in Section 2-A. McKenna Lampe was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kaitlyn Rizor went 2-for-2, scored 3 runs and belted a triple with 2 RBI. Renner went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Katie Lampe scored 3 runs in the courtesy runner spot. Mackenzie Carpenter added a triple, and Kiley Meek went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Hannah Yorty took the loss for Monessen, striking out 4, and had the lone Monessen hit, a triple to lead off the bottom of the first.

Washington 16, Avella 6: Washington scored 14 runs over the final three innings of a 16-6 six-inning win over Avella in a non-section game.

Sheridan Johnson homered and Kiersten Wormsley and Unique Livingston doubled for the Prexies (1-2).

Jessica Bauer doubled for Avella (0-2).
