High school softball roundup: J-M doubles up Avella, stays unbeaten in section
Cait Dugan went 4-for-4, Abby Ankrom drove in two runs and Savannah Clark pitched six strong innings Thursday as Jefferson-Morgan pulled away late to beat host Avella 10-5 in a Class A Section 2 game.
Jefferson-Morgan scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to forge a 10-2 lead. Maddie Reeves tripled for the Rockets (2-0, 3-1) and Dugan and Jasmine Demaske each had a double.
Jordan Rush’s triple was the big hit for Avella (0-2, 0-3). Rush also drove in two runs. Emily Pollock had a double.
Carmichaels 5, Charleroi 2: Kylie Sinn fired a two-hitter and scored two runs to power Carmichaels to a 5-2 victory over visiting Charleroi in Class 2A Section 3.
Carmichaels (3-1, 4-1) scored three runs in the third inning and that was all Sinn needed as she pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and did not issue a walk in the the game.
Emma Holaren drove in two runs for the Mikes, who were held to four hits by Charleroi pitcher Kylie Quigley, who struck out eight.
The Cougars fell to 0-3 in the section and 2-3 overall.
Chartiers-Houston 8, Bentworth 2: Lauren Lober homered and drove in two runs in Chartiers-Houston’s 8-2 in a Section 3-AA game.
The Bucs moved to 3-0 in the section, 6-1 overall. Bentworth is 2-5, 1-2 in the section.
Winning pitcher Ella Brookman, Bella Hess and Karlyn Bayer each hit a double for the Bucs.
Savannah Adams belted two doubles and Leah Lindley one for the Bearcats (1-2, 2-5).
Trinity 10, Ringgold 0: Bailey Bell went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to push Trinity past Ringgold in a five-inning non-section game.
Cameron Meier drove in two runs for the Hillers (5-1) and Emma Morgan allowed one hit and struck out five.
Ringgold dropped to 1-2 and 1-3.
West Greene 15, Serra Catholic 4: Madison Lampe doubled and drove in four runs in a 15-4 rout of Serra Catholic in a non-section game.
Kaitlyn Rizor tripled and drove in three runs and McKenna Lampe went 4-for-4 and scored four times for the Pioneers (2-0, 4-3). Jersey Wise doubled. Jade Renner struck out five.
Burgettstown 13, Brentwood 1: Aubrey Krivak allowed one run over five innings and also homered in Burgettstown’s 13-1 victory over Brentwood in a Section 1-AA game.
Bryanna Kranik doubled for Burgettstown (2-0, 2-3). Hayden Abbott went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Kaylin Caffardo was 2-for-2 with 4 RBI.
Brentwood fell to 0-2 in the section.
Canon-McMillan 18, Allderdice 0: Olivia Ulam’s grand slam only five batters into the game highlighted Canon-McMillan’s 10-run first inning that sent the Big Macs to an 18-0 victory over Allderdice in Class 6A Section 1.
Canon-McMillan (4-0, 5-1) had 10 hits and drew 18 walks. Elika Mowery drove in three runs. Mowery, Lauren Bailey, Taylor Eckles, Elli Kotar and Carrera Sutherland each had a double.
Mapletown 21, California 3: Mapletown scored 12 runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 21-3 three-inning victory over California, keeping the Maples undefeated.
Taylor Dusenberry smacked two doubles and winning pitcher Macee Cree threw a one-hitter. Hannah Dusenberry and Kailey Stover each had a double for Mapletown (2-0, 4-0).
The lone hit for California (0-2, 0-4) was a single by Jenna DeFranco.
Belle Vernon 7, McKeesport 4: Ashley Joll belted two doubles, and Natalie French and Mekenzie Sokol each drove in two runs as Belle Vernon evened its Class 4A Section 2 record with a 7-4 victory over McKeesport.
Winning pitcher Sophie Godzak and Jordan French each had a double for the Leopards, who improved to 2-2 in the section and 2-5 overall.
McKeesport fell to 0-3, 0-3.
South Park 10, Waynesburg 4: Kristen Mesick hit a two-run homer and South Park scored six unearned runs to defeat host Waynesburg 10-4 in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
South Park (2-2, 5-2) led by only 4-3 before it erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Mesick’s homer was the big hit in the inning. Leadoff hitter Jessica Dean was 4-for-4 with a double and winning pitcher Julie Shinavski had three hits including a double.
Selena Phillips, Paige Rutan and Kylee Goodman each doubled for Waynesburg (0-2, 3-2). Rutan drove in two runs.
South Fayette 12, Chartiers Valley 1: Lauren Bernett went 3-for-3 with a home run and Mara Iagnemma fired a three-hitter as South Fayette rolled to a 12-1 victory over Chartiers Valley in a six-inning Class 5A Section 3 game.
South Fayette (1-2, 4-4) scored multiple runs in four of the six innings and pounded out 15 hits, including four that went for extra bases. Liv Goerdt smacked a triple, and Ashley Micholas and Lexi Yates each doubled. Iagnemma had two singles and drove in three runs.
Iagnemma struck out eight. Losing pitcher Jenna Bonneysteele and Teresa Mackey each had a double for CV (0-4, 0-5).
Frazier 20, Beth-Center 0: Frazier needed only three innings to win its Section 3-AA road game at Beth-Center, 20-0.
Emi Curcio, who pitched the final two innings, combined with starting pitcher Logan Hartman on a no-hitter. Rylee Evans had a double, triple and four RBI for Frazier (3-1, 4-1). Hartman and Kathryn Barch each doubled. Barch drove in three.
Peters Township 13, Mt. Lebanon 9: Peters Township scored nine runs in the fourth inning to build an 11-run lead, then held on for a 13-9 victory over host Mt. Lebanon in Class 6A Section 1.
No game details were made available. The win evened PT’s record at 2-2 in the section and 4-4 overall. Mt. Lebanon is 2-3 in section and overall.
